‘Has Fallen’ Is Officially Getting a Third Season, and It’s Bringing in Some Serious Genre Talent

Gerard Butler’s action franchise has quietly built one of the more successful film-to-TV pipelines in recent memory, expanding a straightforward theatrical action series into an ongoing spy thriller universe that’s kept audiences engaged well beyond the original movies. What started with ‘Olympus Has Fallen’ and ‘London Has Fallen’ has since grown into something with real staying power on the small screen.

That growth continued through ‘Paris Has Fallen’ in 2024, and its follow-up ‘Apollo Has Fallen,’ both of which helped establish the TV spin-off as its own distinct entity within the broader franchise. Now, StudioCanal is pushing that expansion even further with a third installment that’s bringing some genuinely notable names into the fold.

StudioCanal’s ‘Has Fallen’ series is returning for Season 3 with Iwan Rheon, Brendan Coyle, and Atandwa Kani joining the cast, according to Deadline. The new season, titled ‘Shadow Has Fallen,’ builds on the Gerard Butler film series and the first two seasons of the TV spin-off, with filming now underway in South Africa and the UK.

Ritu Arya and Tewfik Jallab are both reprising their roles from previous seasons, returning as MI6 operative Zara Taylor and former French secret service agent Vincent Taleb respectively. Joining them for this new chapter are Rheon, known for ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Misfits,’ Coyle, recognizable from ‘Downton Abbey,’ and Kani, who previously appeared in ‘Black Panther.’

The season’s logline centers on a prison bus ambushed in a sudden, brutal attack in Mozambique, where an unassuming British prisoner named Miles, played by Rheon, is extracted by Vincent and Zara. That extraction sets off a chain reaction threatening global infrastructure, world leaders, and the very foundations of government itself, with Miles revealed to be a whistleblower in possession of an untraceable cyber weapon capable of hijacking any computerized system, from banks to military drones.

Series creator Howard Overman, known for ‘War of the Worlds’ and ‘Misfits,’ is once again writing the new six-episode season. Speaking about the scope of this installment, Overman said, “There’s a scale to season 3 that we’ve been building towards since Paris Has Fallen,” adding, “Shadow Has Fallen will see Vincent and Zara embark on their most demanding and morally challenging mission, a mission that takes them into the very heart of Southern Africa.”

Marco Kreuzpaintner and Alice Troughton are attached to direct the season, working alongside a production team that includes Gerard Butler himself as an executive producer through his G-Base banner. The South African setting for this new season also ties into a broader push by StudioCanal into the region, following Canal+ Group’s acquisition of pay-TV giant MultiChoice Group and the studio’s work wrapping filming on Bill Condon’s ‘The Road Home.’

With production now officially underway and a talented ensemble of genre television veterans joining the returning leads, ‘Shadow Has Fallen’ looks poised to continue the franchise’s momentum as it pushes the story into new territory both narratively and geographically.
