Hayden Panettiere’s Mom Claps Back at Gayle King After ‘Shameful’ Criticism
Hollywood has been in mourning since news broke that Hayden Panettiere had died at just 36 years old, with tributes pouring in from co-stars, fans, and industry insiders alike. The ‘Heroes’ and ‘Nashville’ actress spent decades in the public eye, and her sudden passing left many grappling with how quickly a life so visible could end.
In the days that followed, attention shifted from grief to controversy as members of Panettiere’s family began speaking publicly about her final years. Chief among them was her estranged mother, Lesley Vogel, who managed the actress’s career from childhood until she was 19 and quickly became a central figure in the fallout surrounding her daughter’s death.
That controversy reached a boiling point on August 19, when ‘CBS Mornings’ co-host Gayle King addressed Vogel’s comments live on air. King had read through a statement Vogel gave to NBC News describing Panettiere as “amazingly talented” but suggesting she had “sadly lost her way,” and the veteran journalist did not hold back her disapproval.
King told her co-hosts the remarks left her thinking Vogel had wasted an opportunity to honor her daughter, framing the statement as more critical than compassionate. Co-anchor Vladimir Duthiers echoed the sentiment, noting that Panettiere could no longer respond publicly to characterizations of the pain she had once discussed so openly herself.
Vogel had originally spoken to NBC News just two days after Panettiere was found unresponsive at a Greenville, South Carolina residence, where the actress died on August 16. In that conversation, Vogel explained to NBC News that Panettiere’s on-again, off-again boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, was someone the family had been trying to get rid of for quite some time.
The comments reignited long-simmering tension around Panettiere’s relationship history, since Hickerson has faced past domestic violence allegations that Panettiere herself detailed in her memoir, ‘This Is Me: A Reckoning.’ Vogel’s remarks to NBC News painted the relationship as one the family had repeatedly tried to intervene in over the years.
According to a redacted Greenville Police Department report, Hickerson told investigators he stepped out that Sunday morning while Panettiere was getting ready, then returned home and took a nap before his brother, Zach Hickerson, found her unresponsive. Vogel has since publicly questioned that timeline and pushed local authorities to keep the investigation open.
Facing mounting criticism after King’s on-air response, Vogel later gave a lengthy follow-up interview defending her original statement. She described feeling blindsided by the lack of outreach before being criticized so publicly, arguing that grieving parents deserve compassion rather than judgment in the immediate aftermath of losing a child.
Vogel also pointed out that this was not the first loss she has endured, referencing the 2023 death of her son, Jansen Panettiere, Hayden’s younger brother, who died at age 28 from cardiomegaly. She framed her public remarks as an attempt to protect her daughter’s memory rather than tarnish it.
Adding to the friction, several outlets noted that Panettiere’s father, Skip Panettiere, released a warmer, more sentimental tribute to his daughter around the same time, one that focused solely on celebrating her spirit rather than addressing her struggles. The contrast between the two parental statements quickly became its own talking point among fans dissecting the family’s public reactions.
As the investigation into Panettiere’s death continues and no official cause has been released, the dispute between Vogel and King shows no signs of cooling down. What began as a wave of tributes to a beloved actress has instead become a very public reckoning over grief, blame, and who gets to tell a star’s final story.
