HBOMax: Dune Managed To Beat ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’, But Not ‘Wonder Woman 1984’
Let’s put hype and all the marketing aside, but Denis Villeneuve’s Dune still deserves the title of one of the most expected movies of the year. Warner Bros. released the movie simultaneously in theaters and on HBOMax streaming service.
During the opening weekend, Dune was watched on HBOMax by 1.9 million households, beating Zack Snyder’s Justice League which was watched by 1.8 million, but falling short on Wonder Woman 1984 which still holds the record of 2.2 million households in the US during the opening weekend only.
We remember that Wonder Woman 3 was greenlit by Warner Bros almost immediately after its premiere, but the sequel of Dune is still on hold. It is unknown why considering the statistics are pretty impressive, and Villeneuve said he only adapted half of the original book with the first movie.
Dune is an adaptation of the sci-fi novel written by Frank Herbert. The movie was even titled Dune: Part One onscreen. Director Denis Villeneuve is hoping to conclude the adaptation with the sequel. In an interview with IGN, Villeneuve confirmed he’s already working on the sequel’s script and wants to start production next year.
“I would be very ready to go quite quickly. To go quickly in a movie of that size, you still need to make sets, costumes, so we are talking about months. But if ever there’s enthusiasm and the movie is greenlit sooner than later, I will say that I will be ready to shoot in 2022 for sure.”
We still need to wait for the sequel to be officially announced, till then, you can watch this epic sci-fi spectacle in theaters and on HBOMax now.
