HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Finally Reveals Who Haunts Hogwarts
Few things say Halloween quite like a castle full of ghosts, and Hogwarts has always been one of fiction’s great haunted houses. Long before the first-years sit down for their feast, the school’s resident spirits are drifting through walls, grumbling about their afterlives, and quietly shaping the mood of the place.
That atmosphere is exactly what HBO has been building toward. The first season of the series, titled ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,’ will air on HBO and debut on HBO Max on Christmas Day 2026. HBO renewed the series for season 2 on May 6, months ahead of the first season’s debut.
Now, with the calendar landing on Halloween weekend, the network has delivered a fittingly spooky update. HBO has announced that Leo Bill, Andrew Brooke, Daniel Fearn, Laura Smyth and David Threlfall have joined the season 1 cast. Bill will play Nearly Headless Nick, Brooke is taking on the Bloody Baron, Fearn has been cast as the Fat Friar, Smyth will play the Fat Lady, and Threlfall will voice the Sorting Hat.
Variety and Deadline both reported the five first-season roles, with Deadline’s headline pointing to the timing on Halloween Eve. It is a neat bit of programming for a franchise that understands its own calendar.
For anyone who needs a refresher, these are some of the most recognizable fixtures of the first story. Nearly Headless Nick, the Bloody Baron and the Fat Friar are ghosts at Hogwarts who, alongside the portrait of the Fat Lady, allow Gryffindor students into their dormitory if given the correct password. The Sorting Hat, meanwhile, is the famous hat that decides which house new students are placed in.
Those are big shoes, or big hats, to fill. In the original films, John Cleese played Nearly Headless Nick, Terence Bayler was the Bloody Baron, Simon Fisher-Becker appeared as the Fat Friar, Elizabeth Spriggs was the Fat Lady, and Leslie Phillips voiced the Sorting Hat. The new performers will be measured against that lineup, whether they like it or not.
The British comedy world is well represented in the new batch. Smyth is a stand-up comedian, and Bill is known for the sitcom ‘Home Time.’ That suggests the series may lean into the dry, eccentric humor that makes the castle’s ghostly residents so memorable.
The newcomers join a cast that is already taking shape. Dominic McLaughlin leads as Harry Potter, alongside Alastair Stout and Arabella Stanton as Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. John Lithgow plays Albus Dumbledore and Janet McTeer plays Professor McGonagall.
The Sorting Hat’s casting carries extra weight, because the ceremony has become a focal point of the marketing. HBO’s latest trailer highlights the sorting ceremony, Quidditch, and more of Dumbledore and Snape. It shows Harry, Ron and Hermione arriving at Hogwarts and all landing in Gryffindor together.
The scale of the project helps explain why every supporting role matters. HBO is adapting all seven of J.K. Rowling’s books into seven seasons, and the first eight-episode season covers ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.’ Rowling serves as an executive producer.
Fans will no doubt have opinions about the ghosts, the portrait and the hat, since the series is described as a faithful adaptation of the books. A series that promises to stay close to the page invites close scrutiny of every casting choice, even the characters who spend most of their time floating or hanging on a wall.
For now, the announcement gives viewers a reason to look at Hogwarts’ corridors a little differently. With the premiere on Dec. 25, 2026 drawing closer, the castle’s spirits finally have faces, and a famous hat finally has a voice.
