HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Is Shaping Up to Be One of the Most Expensive Series the Network Has Ever Made
Prestige television has produced some genuinely staggering budgets over the past decade, and HBO has been responsible for a fair number of them. Reaching the top of that list requires something close to unprecedented spending. The ‘Harry Potter’ HBO series budget now appears to belong in that conversation.
The commitment behind it explains why. The project aims to retell each of J.K. Rowling’s 7 books one season at a time, a structure that demands infrastructure most adaptations never need to build.
A source familiar with the adaptation confirmed the scale to Deadline, saying the series will rank alongside the final season of ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘The Last of Us’ among HBO’s most expensive productions. Production accounts filed in the UK put rough figures to that claim.
Because the series films in the UK, its production company must file annual accounts. Plum Jam Productions, the special purpose vehicle handling it, reported revenue of £130.6 million, about $175 million, for 2025, the year season 1 entered production at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden.

Development spending preceded that. The company’s revenue was £18.4 million in 2024, bringing the combined total to as much as £150 million, roughly $201 million, put toward launching the television project.
Taken as a rough guide, that works out to around £18.8 million, or $25.2 million, per episode across the 8-episode first season. The final season of ‘Game of Thrones’ was widely reported at $15 million per episode.
Deadline was careful about the limits of the data. Plum Jam has housed other productions in the past, previously operating as Roundabout Productions for HBO’s ‘The Nevers’, so its revenue may include unrelated income.

The accounts also capture an incomplete picture. Filming wrapped in May 2026, meaning the 2025 figures cover only part of production, with post-production costs still to come. Reporting from The Times, which first surfaced the filings, placed spending at £147.4 million by the end of 2025, roughly $197.1 million, while production was only halfway complete.
A source explained that costs are weighted toward the beginning because the lavish sets built at Leavesden were constructed to serve the entire run, one season per book. That means later episodes should cost meaningfully less. The sets represent a one-time capital investment rather than a recurring expense, so the per-episode average is likely to fall as the series progresses.
UK tax incentives may reduce the net figure further, a scheme that didn’t exist when the original 8 films were produced. The comparison to Warner Bros.’ own franchise is instructive. ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’ and both ‘Deathly Hallows’ films reportedly cost $250 million each, with the studio spending between $1.155 billion and $1.2 billion across all 8 features.
A single season approaching $250 million would therefore match the most expensive film in the franchise while covering roughly 8 hours of story rather than one feature’s runtime. Season 1, titled ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’, premieres on HBO Max on December 25 with 8 episodes, developed by showrunner Francesca Gardiner.

Dominic McLaughlin leads as Harry alongside Alastair Stout as Ron and Arabella Stanton as Hermione, chosen after roughly 40,000 actors were considered. John Lithgow plays Dumbledore, with Paapa Essiedu as Snape, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, Nick Frost as Hagrid, and Bel Powley and Daniel Rigby as the Dursleys.
HBO declined to comment on the budget figures. The network renewed the show for a second season in May 2026 before a single episode aired, with ‘Chamber of Secrets’ already shooting.
Do you think HBO’s massive budget for the Harry Potter series is justified?
