Few franchises have shaped a generation like ‘Harry Potter’, and HBO is betting big that the magic still holds. The network’s ‘Harry Potter’ series is adapting J.K. Rowling’s books for television, with each season planned as a faithful take on one novel across a run of roughly a decade.

Interest in the project has been enormous from the start. The teaser trailer released in March became the most-watched trailer in HBO and HBO Max history, with 277 million views in its first 48 hours.

Now HBO has released a new poster as the premiere gets closer. The artwork gives fans an extreme close-up of young Harry’s face, with his famous lightning bolt scar visible across his forehead.

The most striking detail is in his round glasses. One lens reflects Hogwarts Castle along with the words “The Boy Who Lived,” while a faint green glint shines near his eye, a subtle touch that will catch the attention of longtime fans. The poster also features the series’ golden “HP” logo and confirms the premiere date. ‘Harry Potter’ debuts on December 25 on HBO and HBO Max.

The holiday premiere is earlier than originally planned. HBO had previously targeted 2027, so the Christmas Day launch means fans will get to return to Hogwarts sooner than expected. The first season, titled ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’, will run for 8 episodes. HBO hasn’t yet said whether all the episodes will drop at once or roll out weekly.

UK viewers will also be able to tune in, as HBO Max recently launched in the country. That makes the premiere a truly global event for one of the world’s most beloved stories. Dominic McLaughlin leads the series as Harry, with Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. The young trio will grow up on screen across the show’s planned run.

The adult cast is packed with acclaimed actors. John Lithgow plays Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer is Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu takes on Severus Snape, and Nick Frost plays Rubeus Hagrid.

Frost also narrated ‘Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic’, a behind-the-scenes special that premiered in April and gave fans an early look at how the series came together.

Francesca Gardiner serves as showrunner and writer, with Mark Mylod among the directors alongside Jessica Hobbs, Lucy Forbes and Benjamin Caron. Development first began in January 2021.

Filming started in July 2025 at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in Hertfordshire under the working title ‘Dark Train’. The production also shot at locations including London Zoo, King’s Cross, Cornwall and Skipton, with filming continuing through November.

HBO is confident enough in the series that it renewed the show for a second season in May. The next chapter will adapt ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’, and filming was already underway by September.

Jon Brown has been promoted to co-showrunner alongside Gardiner for that season. With a long-term plan in place, the network is clearly treating the series as a franchise for years to come.

For now, all eyes are on the Christmas Day premiere. With this new poster leaning into the iconic image of the Boy Who Lived, HBO is reminding fans exactly why they fell in love with this world in the first place.
