The recently-premiered anime adaptation of Hell’s Paradise has, indeed, become one of the season’s biggest hits, which is why the fans have begun to ask additional questions about the series’ characters, and this article is going to focus on one of them. And while it’s most often Gabimaru, we have decided, in this article, to tell you about another character, a character who is quite an intriguing secondary character and a character who provided us with one of the biggest puzzles in the early part of the story. Aza Toma is introduced early in the story, but due to the specific appearance of the characters, fans have been wondering whether Aza Toma is a boy or a girl. In this article, you will discover whether Aza Toma is a boy or a girl in the series.

Aza Toma is undoubtedly a boy in the series. Regardless of his long hair and his feminine appearance, he is a boy, and there was never any doubt about it. At no point in the series was Aza Toma’s gender ever an issue or in doubt, so we can confirm that he is definitely male. He’s always had a feminine appearance and longer hair, but that is just the author’s choice and decision, so there’s not much to add to that topic.

In the rest of this article, we will tell you what you need to know about the issue of Aza Toma and his gender in the Hell’s Paradise manga and anime. It is now clear that he is a boy, but we will explain how the issue arose and whether Aza Toma’s specific appearance had any effect on the characters or whether it was ever an issue in the series. If you’re not fully up to date with Hell’s Paradise, some spoilers might be ahead.

Aza Toma is a boy, and no one really questioned that at any point in the story

Aza Toma actually debuted early on in the story as he was introduced as the Asaemon overseeing the powerful and somewhat wild Aza Chobei. Of course, we now know that Aza is actually their shared last name because the two of them are brothers, but that was not revealed at the very start of the story. What we found out then was that the two of them would be going to Kotaku and that Aza Toma looked a lot like a girl. But he did not seem to be one.

Namely, if you notice his appearance, Aza Toma is a slim person, quite elegant and very feminine looking. He has long, straight hair that is purple in color and wears a standard Asaemon uniform. Later flashback stories reveal that Aza Toma has been like that since he was a child.

He had, like his brother, a troubled childhood, and the two of them were forced to live like bandits. He had long hair even then, and around the age of 10, we assume he grew his hair out to be long. And while he did always look feminine, there was never any doubt that he was a boy.

Unlike Nurugai, who was actually perceived to be a boy due to her appearance, even by other characters, Aza Toma was, surprisingly, never perceived by anyone to be a girl. And while women were present among the Asaemon ranks, the current Asaemon knew that Toma was a boy. It only makes sense that it is like that, and as for the others… well, he didn’t really interact that much with others, save for his brother, who also knew that Toma was a boy.

So, that is, actually, why Toma’s gender was never an issue in Hell’s Paradise, unlike Nurugai’s. He was never a “trap” character, like Nurugai, and it was revealed early on to the readers that he was a boy, so there was no doubt later in the story.

Aza Toma had an interesting story behind him. He is a calm and intelligent person who uses his exceptional perception to survive in the harsh environment of Kotaku. He is calmer than his brother, who doesn’t think too much – he just asks. Still, while he is definitely smarter than his brother, he considers himself to be inferior to him, which is probably because Chobei always protected him when they were children.

Aza Toma likes his brother a lot and is willing to do whatever it takes to save him; he also thinks very highly of him, which is why he is so happy when Chobei praises him, but he also praises him constantly. And while they are different, it is obvious that they love and respect each other very much.

This is probably because the two brothers had only one another from an early age. They lived a good life until his father’s daimyo rebelled against the shogun and was forced to commit seppuku; his father then became a ronin, and the family lived in poverty.

Their mother died soon after from an illness, while their father was soon executed, leaving the siblings alone in a cruel world. They became bandits, but Chobei was always the one who did more work than Toma.

At a later point in the story, they are caught, and Chobei sacrifices himself, telling Toma to leave, believing that he would free him from prison before the shogun would execute him.

And Toma did that – he became an Asaemon and then took his brother to Kotaku so that he could get his pardon. On the island, Toma grew a lot as a character, and he later even cut his hair as a sign of respect for Gantetsusai, who taught him and made him a stronger fighter. At that point, there was no doubt anymore that Toma is a boy in Hell’s Paradise.
