Hell’s Paradise: Who Is the Hooded Spy? Meet Mei!
And while the recently-premiered anime adaptation of Hell’s Paradise promises to be a big hit, fans have, naturally, begun to ask questions about the series’ characters, their roles in the story, and their fates. Seeing how Hell’s Paradise is truly one of the season’s biggest hits, we have decided to dedicate yet another article to the wonderful world of this manga and reveal some additional information about one of its characters. The character in question will be Mei, the young girl who spied on Gabimaru and the group while they were above the ruined Hōjō village. In this article, you will find out who Mei is and what happened to her in the story.
Mei is a Tensen who lives and Kotaku with her friend, the talking tree known as Hōko, who acts as her father figure. She rebelled against her former ally, Lord Tensen, and was banished from the group after being reverted to her child form. She will later become an ally of Gabimaru and his group, helping them escape from the island and find the Elixir.
The rest of this article will focus on Mei and her fate in the Hell’s Paradise series. Mei was undoubtedly one of the most intriguing characters in the Hell’s Paradise lore, and it only makes sense that the fans want to know what happened to this young girl, so we have decided to compose this article. This article will contain some spoilers from the Hell’s Paradise manga, so be careful how you approach it.
Mei rebelled against her creators and lived alone with Hōko
About a millennium ago, Rien used the Tao of a single Tao puppet to create Mei, who thus became the first Tensen to be created on Kotaku; initially, she was led to believe that Jofuku, Rien’s husband, created her, but that was a lie. Rien trained her and helped take care of her other Tensen siblings, but when she observed the experiments Rien had been doing with immortality, she rejected them and rebelled against them. Because of that, Rien punished her by breaking her plant ovule, which did not kill her but reverted her back to her child form.
After that, she was banished from the central town and wandered the island alone until she was found by Hōko, the talking tree, who took her in as his daughter and raised her. The two lived under the radar and happily had nothing to do with Lord Tensen and their dealings.
So, when our heroes reached Hōjō village and observed it from above, Gabimaru noticed that someone was looking at them, and indeed, a small hooded figure was looking at them from behind a tree. Gabimaru jumps towards her and reveals it is a little girl, but a giant tree-like monster attacks him as she runs away. Thinking that the girl is more important, Gabimaru left the tree monster to the others and went after the girl. Sagiri went with him while Yuzuriha and Senta were left to take care of the monster; Yuzuriha would then steal Senta’s glasses so that he could not observe her techniques.
In the meantime, Gabimaru and Sagiri catch up to the girl, but she can throw Gabimaru aside with ease, which shocks everyone, as she is just a little girl, and no one thinks that she is that powerful. Sagiri tried to tell her that they did not wish to harm her – and they really did not, as Gabimaru chased after her only because he thought she would have some information about the island and their potential enemies – but the girl did not listen and attacked her. Gabimaru stepped in to block the punch, but as soon as he started coughing up blood, he realized that the girl was using some special power and decided to get serious.
He soon immobilized the young girl using vines, but something changed at that moment. Seeing how serious Gabimaru was, the girl became afraid and started crying, which shocked Gabimaru, who then realized that it was, indeed, just a small girl, and he then let her go. Yuzuriha and Senta soon joined them, as well as the tree monster, who started talking and pleaded with them not to hurt her. The monster introduced himself as Hōko and the girl as Mei.

Hōko and Mei proved to be friendly and offered to guide them to the village, and while Yuzuriha believed it was a trap, they all persuaded her to join them. Aside from being friendly, the two of them proved to be an invaluable source of information. Namely, Hōko provided Gabimaru and the others with information about the island and its geography.
They also revealed some valuable information about the monsters on the island, themselves, as well as their future enemies. Hōko also confirmed that the elixir, known as Tan, really does exist, showing its effect on himself as he pulled out his own arm, which then simply grew back. But, Hōko also said that Lord Tensen, the enemies they were about to face, would kill them and that entering the Hōrai, the island’s central area, would be next to impossible for them, as their enemies would be simply too powerful for them to face. This, of course, did not hinder Gabimaru and the others in any way.
As for Mei, her story evolved as the story progressed. She was quite helpful toward Gabimaru and the others. Gabimaru even noticed a strange mark on her, which she was hiding, and told her that she should not hide who she was, meaning that she did not have to hide her mark, which was quite mature and unexpected from him. This would, of course, help Mei get closer to the group, and they would eventually become allies as the story progressed. The same, of course, applies to Hōko, as he was Mei’s “parent.”
Now, Mei’s story is interesting because she was a Tensen. But, despite her heritage, the young girl actually was not an ally of Lord Tensen and rejected their methods. Not only that, she openly opposed them later in the story when she aligned herself with Gabimaru and the others, helping them in finding Tan and escape from the island, despite being a Tensen.
Now, we won’t be revealing Mei’s complete story here as we’ll allow you to enjoy the anime series normally (or the manga, which you should definitely read if you ask us), but we’ll just tell you that she did, really, become an ally of Gabimaru and that she fought alongside them. She even helped Gabimaru master his Tao abilities, which was a significant moment later in the story.
As to her future, well, we’ll just say that Mei survived and is still alive, years after the main storyline ended; namely, as she is not a regular human, she was able to live longer than a regular human and working with Gui Fa, one of her siblings, she is seen alive and well in the present day. This is all we will reveal about Mei here; as for the rest – either wait it out until the anime adapts the whole story or check out the manga – you won’t regret it!
