Here’s How To Get Back to Skyrim From Solstheim

Skyrim’s third expansion, Dragonborn, took us to Solstheim. There, we managed to defeat Miraak, secure our place as the only Dragonborn around, and free the people of Solstheim from Miraak’s evil influence. But after the players were done exploring & questing, returning to Skyrim from Solstheim wasn’t as obvious as getting there. Today’s guide is going to be dedicated to traveling between the two lands, so let’s see how to get back to Skyrim from Solstheim.
When can I start Dragonborn DLC and travel to Solstheim?
You can start Dragonborn DLC after you’ve finished one of the main story quests – The Way of the Voice. You need to complete The Way of the Voice for Greybeards to formally recognize you; before that, only you, Balgruuf, and a couple of random guards know that you are Dragonborn. Miraak is not aware of your Dragonborn status as well, and as soon he figures this out, he will send his cultists after you.
To start Dragonborn DLC and travel to Solstheim, follow these steps:
- Complete the Way of the Voice quest
- Sometime after that, you should be ambushed by 2 NPCs named “cultists.”
- After you’ve dealt with them, loot them, and you should find a note titled “orders,” read this note
- Quest titled “Dragonborn” should be in your journal, and the map marker should point toward Windhelm docks
- Once there, locate Gjalund Salt-Sage, captain of the ship called Northern Maiden; talk to him, and he should take you to Solstheim to investigate cultists further. You have several approaches to persuade Gjalund to take you to Solstheim; you can pay him, persuade him, or straight out threaten him.
