Skyrim: Here’s What Happens When You Legendary a Skill

Skyrim patch 1.9 introduced a new skill-related mechanic called “legendary skills”. The change was huge since it allowed you to effectively break the skill-level cap that was previously 81 and surpass it. Even though legendary skills have been around for quite a while, players still aren’t sure what do legendary skills in Skyrim actually mean. Let’s see what happens when you legendary a skill in Skyrim.

How many skills can you make legendary Skyrim?

You can make all skills legendary in Skyrim under the condition that you have reached master rank (level 100) in the given skill. While you can technically reach a master rank in numerous skills and make them legendary at the same time, we don’t recommend doing that since it will make you significantly weaker. There’s always a possibility that you won’t be able to handle late-game content if you’ve made multiple important skills legendary.

Should I legendary my skills in Skyrim?

You should make your kills legendary in Skyrim if you plan on exceeding the 81-level cap. It’s the only way to keep leveling and keep earning perk points especially if you’re interested in unlocking all perks across all skill trees.
Before you make a skill legendary, keep in mind that some skills will be harder to level up the second time around. First, you won’t be able to use skill books to level up your skills.

You will keep your learned spells, enchantments, and alchemical properties, those are not lost when you “unlearn” a skill. Even if you make your armor, block, and smithing skills legendary, you will be able to equip your high-end armors and you will retain the health boost you’ve acquired while increasing your overall level.
Some skills, like pickpocketing and lockpicking, are much harder to level up multiple times. Most of the items in NPC’s pockets will not respawn, and it’s entirely possible to run out of pockets to pick. The same goes for lockpicking; eventually, you will run out of locks to pick.

While some skills are nearly impossible to make legendary multiple times, some skills are unchanged. Sneak and enchanting for example do not require extra effort to level from 15 to 100 multiple times.
