Here’s Why We Have Valid Reasons to Be Skeptical About Kang’s Replacement in the MCU

This year’s SDCC delivered several major announcements for MCU fans. First, it was revealed that Kang the Conqueror will no longer be the primary villain, as ‘Avengers: Kang Dynasty’ has been retitled ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’
Second, Robert Downey Jr. has been cast as Doctor Doom, a news that has received mixed reactions. Many fans feel that casting RDJ as Doom is a misstep, particularly because they wanted Kang’s story to conclude appropriately.
Fans are particularly skeptical about Doctor Doom due to the lack of buildup and introduction for the character. While Kang the Conqueror/Timely/He Who Remains has been established over three projects—’Loki’ Seasons 1 & 2 and ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’—this substantial development is now being replaced. Kang’s story needs a proper resolution, and it would be jarring if he were simply abandoned without further mention in the MCU.
Another major concern is that Robert Downey Jr. is cast as Doctor Doom. Many fans find it difficult to separate Downey Jr. from his iconic role as Iron Man, especially after his character’s heroic death in ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ While other talented actors were suggested for Doctor Doom, Downey Jr.’s casting is perceived by some as a desperate move.
On one hand, fans now anticipate a connection between Doom and Iron Man in the MCU, which some view as a sign of creative stagnation. Conversely, making no connection between the two characters only adds to the oddity of the casting.
Overall, the consensus is that Doom’s casting feels cheap and creatively uninspired, with a high risk of backfiring. This sentiment is heightened by recent criticism of the Multiverse concept and growing fan fatigue. What are your thoughts? Share them in the comments below!
