Hideo Kojima Will Oversee Death Stranding Film — But Won’t Interfere: “I’ll Let Them Work Without Too Much Input”

Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding is branching out from video games into films, with two distinct projects in development. In a recent interview, Kojima shared details about a live-action movie and an animated feature, both expanding the unique world he created.

The live-action Death Stranding film is being crafted with A24, known for bold and creative projects. Michael Sarnoski, the director behind Pig, is set to helm the movie, with producers Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen on board.

Kojima Productions first announced the film in December 2022, partnering with Hammerstone Studios and executive producer Allan Ungar. A24 joined as co-producer in December 2023, and Sarnoski was confirmed as director in April 2025. The film is targeting a 2027 release.

Kojima is involved but taking a hands-off approach. “I think I will help produce it – I need to kind of guide the project – but I can’t direct it myself, schedule-wise,” he said. He trusts the team to adapt his game into a new medium. “I’ll let them work on it without too much of my input, because that might get in their way. I don’t want to go in and ask them to make a bunch of changes; that’s not cool. I trust these people, and I trust A24 and Michael,” he added. While the film will differ from the game, Kojima is overseeing it to ensure it stays true to his vision.

Separately, an animated Death Stranding film is in the works, written by Aaron Guzikowski, known for Raised by Wolves. This adult-oriented feature will tell a fresh story within the Death Stranding universe, distinct from the live-action movie. Guzikowski is thrilled to contribute. “I love the world of Death Stranding, it’s so creatively freeing, so beautifully dark and yet hopeful; I’m so excited and honored that Hideo Kojima, whose work I’ve long admired, has invited me to dwell within his creation,” he said. “Drawing and animation have always been near and dear to my heart, so to finally get to play in this space is a dream come true.”

With these films, Death Stranding is evolving into a broader franchise. Kojima’s role as a guiding force keeps his creative stamp on both projects, even as he steps back to let others take the lead.

Kojima’s willingness to trust others with Death Stranding shows confidence in his world’s ability to resonate across mediums.

The live-action film with A24 and Sarnoski sounds promising for capturing the game’s emotional depth, while the animated feature could explore bold new ideas. I’m excited to see how these films balance Kojima’s vision with fresh perspectives. What do you think about Death Stranding expanding into films?
