Few Hollywood careers have been as decorated as Hilary Swank’s, yet the actress has been just as candid about how long it took her to build the family she always wanted. The two-time Oscar winner earned best actress honors for ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ in 2000 and ‘Million Dollar Baby’ in 2005, at a time when work came first.

Speaking to People in May, Swank described her career as having once been a baby of its own, and admitted she knew she wanted children someday without planning what that would look like. She added that if she’d had a child in her 20s or 30s, she believes she’d be a very different parent than she is now.

Her personal story took shape over the past decade. Swank married businessman Philip Schneider in 2018, 2 years after they met on a blind date, and she has explained that the right relationship and circumstances simply didn’t come together until later.

In April 2023, the couple welcomed twins Aya and Ohm when Swank was 48. When she first announced that pregnancy, she called it a total miracle after years of wanting a family.

On Wednesday, October 14, Swank surprised fans by revealing on Instagram that she is pregnant with her third child at 52. The playful video showed Swank, Schneider, and the twins dancing in the dark with glow sticks taped to their outfits, before revealing her baby bump.

She captioned the clip with a wink at her career, telling fans who’d been asking about her next project that this one releases in December. The news quickly spread worldwide, with many outlets covering the reaction to her announcement.

Not everyone has been supportive of her choices over the years. During a taping of ‘The Drew Barrymore Show’ in New York on Thursday, October 15, Swank opened up about the double standard women face, noting that women receive backlash for having children later in life while men largely don’t.

Barrymore agreed, pointing out that men become fathers well into their 80s, and acknowledged that people weren’t always gracious when Swank had children in her 40s. Swank then recalled one particularly painful encounter in which a woman told her she had no right to have kids so late and called her too old.

The woman explained that her father had been her favorite person and had died when she was in her early 20s, describing the loss as devastating. Swank said she was drawn to that story in particular, and rather than taking offense, she tried to understand where the criticism came from.

Her response was thoughtful rather than defensive. Swank reflected that she would rather be born and have that beloved person in her life, even for a shorter time, than never experience that relationship at all.

The conversation resonated with many viewers. One commenter shared that her own parents had her in their early 40s and passed away when she was in her late 20s, adding that she is now pregnant at 41 and doing her best to stay healthy for her 3 children, while another simply reminded Swank that she doesn’t owe anyone an explanation. The full interview is set to air on October 20. Swank was also photographed showing off her baby bump as she left the talk show studio after the taping.

With a December arrival on the horizon, the actress appears to be embracing this new chapter with the same openness she has brought to the rest of her parenting journey. Her measured response to the criticism has turned a hurtful comment into a wider conversation about how society judges women’s choices.

Do you think women like Hilary Swank face unfair criticism for having children later in life?
