Leaked set details have revealed a set setup for the ‘Battle of the Gullet’ currently being prepared for House of the Dragon season 3. This epic naval battle will now be the opening of the new season, featuring four dragons fighting in the skies and, naturally, ships.

The Battle of the Gullet is a key moment in the war between Rhaenyra Targaryen’s Blacks and Aegon II’s Greens. This battle is crucial because Rhaenyra wants to stop supplies from reaching King’s Landing, ensuring the city suffers under her enemies’ rule.

Fans were expecting to see the battle in Season 2, but HBO decided to delay it. According to House of the Dragon’s Head of Drama, Francesca Orsi, the decision was made to allow for better production quality and to build excitement for the story. She explained:

“I’m so glad we waited because it’s going to be better than ever. It’s just so massive, we needed the time to build it.”

A high level of expertise is going into making this battle realistic. Orsi mentioned that one of the show’s lead producers, Kevin de la Noy, also worked on Titanic and is bringing his experience to make the battle look as real and dramatic as possible.

The Gullet is a key sea route that connects King’s Landing to food and supplies. Rhaenyra and her forces control nearby islands, including Dragonstone and Driftmark. They patrol the waters, making sure no ships reach the capital. However, the Greens fight back by forming an alliance with the Triarchy, a powerful naval force.

Prince Regent Aemond Targaryen sends Lord Tyland Lannister to negotiate with the Triarchy. Despite warnings from his advisors, Aemond insists on the alliance, declaring:

“I have a task for you as well, Ser Tyland. We will make an alliance with the Triarchy. I’ve had enough of this cursed blockade.”

As a result, the Triarchy’s fleet, led by Lyseni commander Sharako Lohar, prepares to join the Greens in battle. The Season 2 finale showed these alliances forming, setting the stage for the upcoming fight.

The battle will be a turning point in the war. Prince Aegon, who flies the dragon Stormcloud, barely escapes an ambush and warns Dragonstone of the attack. Prince Jacaerys, riding Vermax, leads the charge against the enemy but tragically does not return from battle. Meanwhile, Rhaenyra’s son Viserys is captured, though the Blacks believe he has died.

At sea, the Velaryon fleet, which has been controlling the waters, will face a major challenge. The Greens will gain an advantage by breaking the blockade. However, the Triarchy will also suffer heavy losses, weakening their strength in the war.

The Dragons in the Battle

Four dragons will fight in the battle:

  • Vermithor (ridden by Hugh Hammer)
  • Seasmoke (claimed by Addam of Hull)
  • Silverwing (claimed by Ulf)
  • Sheepstealer (possibly claimed by Princess Rhaena)

Vermax and the newly tamed dragons will attack the Triarchy’s warships. Seasmoke, already proven in battle, will face its first test under Addam of Hull. Silverwing and Vermithor are powerful dragons known for their deadly fire. Rhaena has never flown a dragon before, but she may ride Sheepstealer into battle.

With the battle finally arriving in Season 3, fans can expect an intense and visually stunning showdown that will change the course of the war.
