That would be Alys Rivers, the centuries old healer with unsettling abilities who has been tangled up with Aemond Targaryen ever since her introduction in season two. According to the episode’s official trailer, Criston Cole and Gwayne Hightower are finally set to arrive at Harrenhal themselves, and it looks like they will end up speaking with Alys once they get there. Notably absent from that preview, though, are Aemond and Alys as a pair, meaning fans will likely have to wait a bit longer to see exactly how their fraught dynamic resolves.
Rankin has been candid about how much thought she has put into shaping the character, especially given how little material about Alys actually exists in George R.R. Martin’s source books. Speaking with ScreenRant, Rankin explained that grounding Alys required her own invented history since the books offer almost nothing to work from, saying it was imperative for her to make personal sense of who Alys is and where she came from, and that things left vague in season two will finally start to develop and be exposed this year.
Showrunner Ryan Condal has also teased that Alys is one of several female characters receiving expanded focus this season, alongside Helaena Targaryen and Alyn of Hull. That expanded attention tracks with how much intrigue Alys has generated despite her relatively limited screen time so far, and it suggests her storyline is about to become far more central to the larger war unfolding around her.
Fans have long speculated about Alys’s true nature, with some drawing comparisons to Melisandre from ‘Game of Thrones’ given their shared mysticism and apparent defiance of a normal lifespan.
