‘House of the Dragon’s’ Wild Dragons and the Danger They Pose to Both Sides

Wild dragons have become one of the most unpredictable threads running through ‘House of the Dragon,’ complicating the already brutal war between the Greens and the Blacks. Unlike the tamed beasts ridden by members of House Targaryen, these creatures answer to no one, and that unpredictability has already reshaped the show’s biggest battles.

As the Dance of the Dragons has escalated across the show’s run, the presence of unclaimed dragons roaming Westeros has forced both factions to reckon with forces they cannot fully control. Understanding who these dragons are, and what they have already done on screen, helps explain why their involvement carries so much weight.

Sheepstealer’s Bond With Rhaena Targaryen

Sheepstealer is described as a large, brown dragon best known for a diet built around sheep, and he was reportedly hatched during the reign of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen, residing on Dragonmont but frequently venturing out in search of food. That behavior carried directly into the show’s present timeline, when Rhaena Targaryen and her companions in the Vale of Arryn stumbled onto burnt sheep carcasses and scorched land, a discovery that hinted at the creature’s presence long before he was named on screen.

The clues pointed to Rhaena eventually bonding with the wild dragon, and that pairing has since driven some of the season’s most tense sequences. A recent clip from HBO Max centers on Sheepstealer clashing with Team Black’s dragons, following Rhaenyra Targaryen after she discovers who has actually been riding the wild beast during the Battle of the Gullet.

That revelation set off a confrontation that fans had been anticipating for weeks. In Season 3, Episode 7, Rhaenyra and Addam of Hull track down Daemon and Rhaena in the Vale, and the resulting fight becomes one of the most brutal dragon battles the series has shown.

Despite how close it comes to ending in tragedy, Sheepstealer survives the encounter. The dragon is severely wounded in the episode, but there is a strong chance viewers will see Rhaena’s dragon again before the season closes.

Cannibal, the Oldest and Most Feared Dragon on Dragonstone

Cannibal is the dragon most associated with menace among the wild trio, and his name comes up specifically because Daemon references him directly. In Season 1, Episode 10, Daemon mentions three wild dragons to Rhaenyra while trying to convince her to bring them into her arsenal against Aegon II and the Hightowers. Cannibal is one of the three named in that pitch, alongside Sheepstealer and Grey Ghost.

His reputation within the story is not for being tamed, but for being avoided. Only Baela Targaryen refused to fear the Cannibal, offering to pursue the wild dragon to determine whether he had killed Grey Ghost, though she was not allowed to take that risk. That detail underscores how dangerous the character is treated even by the family whose blood theoretically gives them a claim over dragons.

According to reporting on the source material, Cannibal reportedly outlives the Dance of the Dragons entirely before vanishing afterward, which has kept fans wondering whether the show will eventually depict him directly. As of the most recent episodes, that has not happened, though speculation continues to build around whether the series intends to bring him into frame before the war concludes.

Showrunner Ryan Condal has been careful not to confirm or rule out future appearances for Cannibal or Grey Ghost. Speaking with IGN, Condal noted that “assumption and expectation are probably dangerous words to use in this particular world,” adding that there is still a lot of runway left and more dragon cards to be turned over as the story continues.

Grey Ghost and the Other Unclaimed Beasts

Grey Ghost rounds out the trio of wild dragons and is generally described as a resident of Dragonstone during the Dance of the Dragons. He is one of three known wild dragons in the story, alongside Cannibal and Sheepstealer. Unlike Sheepstealer, Grey Ghost has not been given significant screen time, and much of what is known about him comes from the source novel rather than the show itself.

What separates these three from other unclaimed dragons in the story is the fact that they have never had a rider at all. None of the wild dragons have ever been tamed, distinguishing them from a dragon like Seasmoke, which lost its rider rather than never having one to begin with.

That distinction matters because dragons without a prior bond are treated very differently within the world’s internal logic. Riderless dragons are generally divided into two categories, those that are considered tameable and those that are not, with King Jaehaerys’ Vermithor and Queen Alysanne’s Silverwing falling into the more tameable group because both had previous riders and calmer temperaments. Claiming a fully wild dragon, by contrast, is described as risky business that could easily cost a rider their life.

Other dragons have already demonstrated how dangerous or unpredictable that claiming process can be. Silverwing herself was previously unclaimed until a dragonseed named Ulf the White stumbled upon her while fleeing Dragonmont, bonding with the docile, silver-bodied female dragon in the process.

What the Wild Dragons Mean for the War

The presence of Sheepstealer, Cannibal, and Grey Ghost has turned the war for the Iron Throne into something less predictable than a simple contest between two royal factions. Cannibal, Grey Ghost, and Sheepstealer remain completely wild dragons with no previous riders, meaning neither Team Black nor Team Green can simply assume control over them.

Sheepstealer’s arc in Season 3 shows exactly how volatile that dynamic can be, since a wild dragon bonded to one side can still be hunted down and nearly destroyed by dragons loyal to the other. During the confrontation in the Vale, Daemon warns Rhaena that the approaching riders will tear her from the sky, and the fight that follows involves four dragons and their riders converging at once.

With Cannibal and Grey Ghost still unaccounted for on screen, both factions may eventually be forced to reckon with two more unpredictable weapons before the Dance of the Dragons reaches its conclusion. Given how much damage Sheepstealer alone has already caused, the arrival of either of the remaining wild dragons would only raise the stakes further.
