How to read Noragami?
Finally, in this section, we are going to bring you an overview of each volume of the manga, including the plot outline and the chapters collected in each specific volume, which is also the proper reading order for the whole series.
Volume 1 – “Divine Intervention for Sale“
Yato is a homeless god without a shrine or worshippers. In order to achieve his goals, he offers services for a fee to those in need. His ultimate aim is to accumulate enough money to build a luxurious temple. Despite taking various odd jobs, ranging from finding lost kittens to assisting students with bullies, Yato is open to any work to reach his aspirations.
Volume 2 – “Fortune Be With You“
Hiyori Iki, a middle school girl and pro-wrestling enthusiast, undergoes a transformation after encountering Yato, a stray god. She becomes something neither human nor ayakashi. Yato, through his “divine intervention,” attempts to return Hiyori to normal, but his unpredictable nature raises doubts about his ability to fulfill the task. Additionally, the powerful warrior god Bishamonten seeks revenge against Yato, adding a new challenge to the situation.
Volume 3 – “Fighting The Blight“
After a close call with Bishamon, Yato retreats with Yukiné. Yato’s condition worsens due to blight, and Hiyori discovers him in critical condition. Yukiné’s troublesome behavior intensifies the blight, putting Yato’s life at risk. Hiyori urgently seeks help for Yato, questioning whether any of his few friends can save him and raising doubts about whether the stray god even has friends.
Volume 4 – “Sinister Shinki“
Bishamonten, a powerful warrior goddess, faces challenges due to having numerous shinki. A trusted aide among them devises a perilous plan, getting involved with a mysterious Stray. Kazuma senses trouble but struggles to discern the specifics. Simultaneously, Hiyori seeks Yato’s help, but he is presented with a difficult solution. The question arises: will Yato fix Hiyori, even if it means severing all ties with her?
Volume 5 – “Trouble in Paradise“
As Kugaha continues scheming against Bishamon, Yukine becomes concerned about his new friend Suzuha. He discovers Kazuma leaving flowers at Suzuha’s cherry tree and follows him into the enemy stronghold in the heavens. However, when Bishamon attacks, Kazuma is confronted with the need to choose which side he truly supports.
Volume 6 – “The Battle Continues“
Bishamon gains the upper hand against Yato, seemingly thwarting Kuguha’s plan to destroy her. However, the situation takes a turn when Bishamon’s medicine wears off, causing her and any shinki she touches to be afflicted by blight. Concurrently, Kazuma endeavors to free himself and Hiyori before she loses the opportunity to return to the land of the living.
Volume 7 – “The Ties That Bind“
After concluding the battle with Bishamon, Yato faces the task of resolving lingering matters, including fulfilling his promise to Tenjin by cutting ties with Hiyori. However, being a nameless god, Yato relies on being remembered to survive. The question arises: how will he cope once he is removed from Hiyori’s life?
Volume 8 – “Forget Me Not“
Yato’s free time comes to an end as he is confined to Takama-ga-hara, compelled to fulfill his father’s commands. While he typically plays along until he’s released, this time he must expedite his return. The urgency stems from the risk that Hiyori, his sole follower, may forget about him if he doesn’t return promptly.
Volume 9 – “Queen of the Underworld“
Ebisu and Yato encounter Izanami, the woman possessing what they seek, the Word of Yomi. Izanami agrees to provide it if one of them agrees to stay with her indefinitely. Simultaneously, the Heavenly Guard discovers Ebisu’s location, and they are en route to administer divine retribution.
Volume 10 – “Back From the Dead“
Yato remains trapped in the Underworld, with Izanami making every effort to impede his escape. His only potential savior is his former adversary, Bishamon. The question arises: will she find it within herself to rescue her despised foe, or is there an alternative solution?
Volume 11 – “God of Happiness“
With a newfound understanding of his life’s purpose, Yato, along with Yukine, resumes his efforts to improve the world. However, Hiyori faces her own challenges. The question arises: what can Yato do to assist the one person he genuinely wants to bring happiness to?
Volume 12 – “The Gods’ Secret“
Angry over Yato’s release, the stray plots revenge against her rival. Taking advantage of Yato’s distraction, she approaches Yukine and reveals a secret held by the gods, something Yato is determined to protect at any cost. Hiyori, curious about the secret, realizes that keeping Yukine’s past concealed may be crucial to safeguarding him.
Volume 13 – “Playing with Fire“
Hiyori, aware of Koto’s true identity, resolves not to let him interfere with her anymore. When he attempts to antagonize her once more, she confronts him about Yato and stands her ground, unafraid. However, challenging Yato’s father comes with potentially severe consequences.
Volume 14 – “Aftermath “
After the hospital disaster, Hiyori and her family are grappling with the aftermath, with Yato convinced that her troubles are his fault. In an attempt to shield her, he decides to run away, promising not to return until he becomes a genuine god of happiness. Meanwhile, Bishamon is facing challenges and fallout of her own.
Volume 15 – “Matchmaker, Matchmaker“
Despite tensions between Kazuma and Yukiné, Yato is eager to attend his first Divine Council, which will feature a matchmaking ceremony where gods select soul mates for the mortals of Japan. The synopsis raises questions about what this event might signify for Hiyori and her future husband.

Bishamon, having discovered the legendary blessed vessel, is determined to eliminate the Crafter once and for all. Volume 17 – “Playing With Fire“
The conflict escalates as Bishamon nears the Crafter. While Kazuma and her other shinki avoid divine retribution, Kazuma is determined to save his master from punishment. Volume 19 – “Trial by Pledge“
Bishamon is severely injured, and Yato and Yukiné find themselves arrested by the Heavens. In a desperate move, Tenjin initiates a Trial by Pledge as their last hope. If successful, Amaterasu will forgive all perceived wrongdoings, but the stakes are high. Three gods must pledge the lives of their most trusted shinki. The tension rises as the score becomes tied, and Daikoku steps forward, volunteering himself as a sacrifice.
Volume 20 – “Gearing Up“
Yato, committed to confronting his father, faces the challenge of finding a powerful shinki to take down the Crafter. However, vessels capable of surviving an attack from Chiki are scarce. As he considers his options, a more pressing issue arises: with Bishamon aware of the Crafter’s appearance, her life is now in serious jeopardy.
Volume 21 – “Curiosity Kills“
Yukine shelters a fugitive stray at Kofuku’s place, but the new friend disappears when Kofuku returns with a group of shinki. While searching for her, Yukine encounters her former master.
