How Powerful Is Goblin Slayer Really? (& Will He Become Stronger?)

One of the most mysterious and powerful characters in the GOBLIN SLAYER! series is actually the protagonist, the so-called Goblin Slayer. One trait that makes him seem so peculiar is that he never removes his helmet, but he is also quite aggressive and overly zealous when it comes to killing goblins. Still, he is not a bad person – he is just traumatized and focused on revenge. In the series, Goblin Slayer has demonstrated some amazing feats and abilities, but how powerful is he really? In this article, we are going to discuss his powers and abilities and reveal just how powerful he is as a character and whether he can grow!

Goblin Slayer is the titular protagonist of the series

Goblin Slayer, the series’ main character, is a skilled silver-rank adventurer who is solely focused on eliminating goblins. In fact, the Guild has awarded him a Specialist rating because of the vast number of goblins he has slain as well as his research into their biology and habits. The only creatures he deals with are goblins, yet he frequently has to deal with other animals as well because the goblins have formed alliances with them.

His most characteristic trait of him is his obsession with hunting goblins, born after witnessing the massacre of his village, of which he was the only survivor by hiding under a floorboard but thus having to watch while the goblins raped and killed his older sister. After being orphaned, he is taken in by the uncle of his childhood friend, Cow Girl, and uses his wages to pay the rent. While he is open to the idea that there are good goblins somewhere in the world, he believes that until proven otherwise, the only ones who are good goblins are those who remain holed up, never giving the adventurers reason to hunt them down.

His face is never shown; the few who managed to see his face describe him as a surprisingly good-looking boy but visibly scarred by the life he leads: when the back of his torso is shown, it is seen as is covered by numerous scars, while in the flashbacks regarding his childhood, it is possible to observe the ash blonde color of his hair.

What are Goblin Slayer’s powers and abilities?

His equipment appears lacking for an adventurer of his rank, but a keen eye can notice how perfect it is for his missions: light armor with a characteristic helmet for good protection without slowing down his agility too much, a small shield round sword, and a short sword, necessary for fighting in goblin dens, too narrow to use a normal sword, and furthermore, the dirt that covers all his equipment hides his true scent, which otherwise the goblins would be able to perceive.

While he is skilled in melee, his fighting style is actually quite pragmatic and focuses on elements such as setting traps, using the enemy’s own weapons, and anything that can give him an advantage. Even his companions notice how much he is able to use lateral thinking: to defeat his enemies, he exploits the peculiarities of the surrounding environment and the resources at his disposal to obtain unthinkable results, as when he uses the miracles of the Priestess in theory, defensive, as support to attack more effectively, or when transforming a teleportation scroll into a weapon.

Even if throughout the story, it is hinted that Goblin Slayer’s abilities are not at all extraordinary, in the sense that they are all the result of experience and constant training, without any particular talent (he himself admits that facing a horde of goblins would be too much even for him), it is at the same time clarified that he is still a sort of anomaly, given that the divinities themselves have often noticed how much his actions escape their machinations.

Emblematic is the fact that, years before, the gods decided to make tragic the childhood of their future champion, Heroine, by having the orphanage where she lived destroyed; but Goblin Slayer, recently become an adventurer, intervened and saved her and the rest of the orphanage, without the gods being able to foresee or prevent it.

Goblin Slayer is strong, but he still has a lot of space to grow as a character

Now that we have explained this, we can actually tell you that Goblin Slayer is, indeed, a powerful character and is one of the best when it comes to slaying goblins. But, he himself has admitted on more than one occasion that he is not the strongest character out there and that he still has room for improvement; he openly admitted that he could not take on certain enemies over the course of the story.

Of course, as far as goblins are concerned, he is probably the best at this moment, but he still has room for improvement. He has a lot to learn and to improve, as well as hone is current skills, so we do think that he can become even stronger in the future. It all depends on the course the story is going to take, but Goblin Slayer can definitely become even stronger later on.
