Where the Unabomber Name Origin Comes From

The FBI dubbed the crimes UNABOM, an abbreviation of university and airline bomber, because the first three bombs were sent to universities and the fourth to an airport. His early targets included universities and an airline, which is why the FBI gave him the code name.

The label did not start with the public. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service notes that the press created the name Unabomber from the original task force designation. Because the FBI used the handle before his identity was known, the media began calling him the Unabomber.

The 1979 attack on an airliner helped cement the airline half of the name. A bomb placed aboard an American Airlines flight began smoking and forced an emergency landing, and several people suffered smoke inhalation. Elliott Halpern, a filmmaker behind a docuseries on the case, explained the logic to Oxygen.com by saying the FBI used the case identifier to refer to the attacks on universities and airlines.

The UNABOM Task Force and the Manhunt

Postal inspectors and agents from the FBI and the ATF formed the UNABOM Task Force, a combination of the words university and airline bomber. That group would eventually grow to more than 150 full time investigators, analysts and others.

The scale of the effort reflected the difficulty of the case. Kaczynski admitted carrying out 16 bombings that killed three people and injured 23. His explosives were carefully constructed, and the wooden boxes containing them were sanded to eliminate fingerprints.

The breakthrough did not come from forensics. In 1995 the Unabomber sent the FBI a manifesto of about 35,000 words, and officials approved its publication. Linda Patrik recognized the ideas in the writings and convinced her husband David Kaczynski to turn his brother in, and agents arrested Kaczynski at his Montana cabin on April 3, 1996.

The film chooses to spend much of its time before the bombings. It flashes back and forth between Kaczynski’s struggle to fit in as a young man at Harvard and the later investigation by FBI agent Joanne Miller, played by Shailene Woodley. The story centers on his relationship with psychologist Henry Murray, played by Russell Crowe.

The idea grew from a small piece of radio. Screenwriter Nelson Greaves said, according to Netflix’s Tudum, that he heard a short NPR anecdote mentioning Kaczynski’s time at Harvard and his involvement in unethical psychological experiments. That detail became the foundation for the screenplay he wrote with Sam Chalsen.

Director Janus Metz spoke about the approach with The Boston Globe, saying the film tackles a period of Kaczynski’s life that has not been explored much on screen. Metz described the version of Kaczynski in the film as a young idealist.

Crowe also addressed the material when promoting the release. He said he was unfamiliar with this part of Kaczynski’s biography before taking the role, and that the film does not shy away from the ethical failings of his character.

Cast, Critics and the ‘Unabomber’ Movie Reception

Jacob Tremblay plays the young Ted Kaczynski, with Russell Crowe as Henry Murray and Shailene Woodley as Joanne Miller. The film was directed by Janus Metz, and it runs one hour and 40 minutes.

Critical response has been mixed. One review gave the film three out of five and called Tremblay very impressive as the young Kaczynski. Variety was less convinced, arguing that Tremblay does not persuade as the teenage Kaczynski and that the film pairs a semi interesting origin story with a by the numbers procedural.

The Variety review also drew a comparison to earlier work. It pointed to the 2021 biopic ‘Ted K’ with Sharlto Copley, which worked because it did not try to psychologize Kaczynski the way ‘Unabomber’ does.
