Hugh Jackman Suggested an Ideal Successor for His Wolverine Role Years Ago – With a Tragic Twist

When you think of Wolverine, it’s hard not to see Hugh Jackman in your mind. He’s been playing the role for years, and even after a short break, he’s coming back for another round in the upcoming ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’

Jackman’s portrayal of Wolverine is loved for his tough look, deep emotions, character growth, and dedication to the role. He brings the character’s rugged appearance and emotional depth to the screen, earning praise for his strong performances in many films.

Though it’s hard to envision someone else in the role, the day will inevitably come when someone new steps into the shoes of Marvel’s beloved mutant. Fans have often debated who should succeed Hugh Jackman as the iconic character. Surprisingly, Jackman himself had already thought of his replacement years ago, but the suggestion is tragically poignant.

Originally when I played it – when he was alive, god rest his soul – I thought Heath Ledger could be a good young version of [Wolverine].

However, Jackman did acknowledge that it would feel strange to see someone else portray the character. And I have to agree, he is right.

Heath Ledger sadly passed away on January 22, 2008, six years before Jackman made this statement. He was only 28 years old and his death was attributed to an overdose of prescription drugs.

Ledger’s portrayal of the Joker in ‘The Dark Knight’ is one of his most iconic roles. His unique interpretation, intense commitment, unpredictability, memorable quotes and scenes, and lasting impact on pop culture have immortalized his performance.
