Inside Gotham’s Most Twisted Rogues Gallery Gets a New Riddler and Fans Are Losing It
Warner Bros. Animation has been quietly building toward one of its most ambitious DC projects in years, and the wait for concrete details is finally over. The studio is bringing one of the most beloved storylines in ‘Batman’ comic history to animated life, and the casting reveals have given fans plenty to dissect.
The project in question is ‘Batman: Knightfall Trilogy‘, a three part animated event adapting the iconic early 1990s comic arc in which Bane breaks the Bat both physically and mentally. The first trailer dropped from Warner Bros. and DC, showing a series of R rated animated films that push the caped crusader to his limits while he faces an overwhelming villainous threat. The story originally ran from 1993 to 1994 and was written by Chuck Dixon, Jo Duffy, Alan Grant, Dennis O’Neil, and Doug Moench.
Now the news fueling the latest wave of buzz, the one circulating across social media, centers on who is stepping into Gotham’s rogues gallery. David Dastmalchian, known for his role in ‘The Dark Knight’, has been confirmed to voice the Riddler in ‘Batman: Knightfall’. Pablo Schreiber voices Jean-Paul Valley, also known as Azrael, who steps in as Batman when Bruce Wayne is unable to continue, growing increasingly violent and unstable along the way.
What makes the casting especially fun for longtime DC fans is just how familiar Dastmalchian already is with this universe. The Riddler role marks the eighth DC villain the actor has played, following Thomas Schiff in ‘The Dark Knight’, Abner Krill as Polka Dot Man in ‘The Suicide Squad’, Dwight Pollard on ‘Gotham’, Abra Kadabra on ‘The Flash’, both Calendar Man and Penguin in ‘Batman: The Long Halloween’, and Grendon in ‘Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham’. That kind of resume has fans joking that he might as well be an honorary member of the Bat family at this point.
The rest of the voice cast reads like a who’s who of recent genre television and film. Anson Mount takes on Batman and Bruce Wayne, while Michael Mando voices the trilogy’s lead antagonist, Bane. The footage also confirmed the designs for several other classic villains making appearances, including the Joker, Mister Freeze, and Scarecrow. The film had its world premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, with Rick Morales serving as supervising producer alongside producers Jim Krieg and Kimberly S. Moreau, and Sam Register and Michael Uslan as executive producers.
For anyone who grew up reading the original comics, the appeal here is obvious. The Knightfall saga unfolded across three chapters, Knightfall, Knightquest, and KnightsEnd, and saw Bruce Wayne sidelined while the far more volatile Azrael took over as Batman. Director Jeff Wamester is behind the project, with the screenplay credited to Jeremy Adams. A specific release date has not been locked in yet, though the first installment is expected later in 2026.
With a cast this stacked and a story this beloved, the only real question left is how fans will feel watching Dastmalchian add yet another iconic Gotham villain to his growing collection. Does this casting choice feel like the perfect fit for the Riddler, or were you hoping for a completely different voice behind the riddles this time around?
