‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ Just Became the Best-Reviewed Movie in Franchise History
Long-running horror franchises rarely get better with age. After enough sequels, diminishing returns tend to set in, both at the box office and with critics, as filmmakers struggle to find fresh angles on material audiences have already seen play out several times over.
The ‘Insidious’ series has followed that pattern for much of its existence, with the franchise’s reputation largely resting on the strength of its 2010 original while subsequent chapters drew more mixed reactions. That history made the arrival of a sixth installment feel like a genuine gamble for Sony and Blumhouse.
That gamble appears to have paid off. ‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ has debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with a 68 percent Tomatometer score from 44 reviews, officially making it the highest-rated film in the entire franchise, surpassing even the original movie’s 66 percent score.
To put that number in context, every other entry in the series has struggled to crack even a “fresh” rating on the aggregator. ‘Insidious: Chapter Three’ sits at 56 percent, followed by ‘Insidious: The Red Door’ at 39 percent, ‘Insidious: Chapter 2’ at 38 percent, and ‘Insidious: The Last Key’ trailing the pack at 35 percent.
Director Jacob Chase, best known for 2020’s ‘Come Play,’ both wrote and directed this latest chapter, basing the story on an idea he developed alongside ‘The Conjuring 2’ writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. Rather than continuing the Lambert family’s story that carried the first five films, ‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ introduces an entirely new family to torment.
The film follows Gemma, played by Amelia Eve, a young mother raising her daughter in the same house she grew up in. She discovers she can travel into The Further, the purgatorial realm at the center of the franchise’s mythology, before realizing she possesses an even rarer ability: she can pull whatever lurks there back into the real world with her.
That twist sets up a new kind of threat for the series, as the demons within The Further quickly catch on to Gemma’s unique power. The film also stars Brandon Perea, Sam Spruell, and Maisie Richardson-Sellers, alongside Lin Shaye, who returns once again as Elise Rainier, the psychic medium who has anchored the franchise since its earliest days.

Despite the strong overall score, reactions to the film have been far from unanimous. Some critics have embraced the new direction wholeheartedly, while others feel the franchise has simply run out of fresh ideas after six installments.
That split has produced some notably contrasting reviews. Where one outlet praised it as a return to form for the series, another dismissed it as dull and uninspired, illustrating just how divisive this new chapter has proven to be even among horror-focused critics.
Franchise fatigue is a real challenge in modern horror, and ‘Insidious’ has spent over a decade navigating diminishing critical returns since its breakout debut. Landing the best-reviewed installment yet, more than 15 years after James Wan and Leigh Whannell first introduced audiences to The Further, suggests there may still be genuine creative life left in this world.
With the franchise having already earned hundreds of millions at the global box office across its previous five films, a strong critical reception for this new chapter could help determine whether audiences are ready to follow Gemma’s story further, or whether this represents a fitting send-off for the series as a whole.
