Insomniac Games has spent years building its reputation on Marvel heroes. After the success of its ‘Spider-Man’ games, the studio turned its attention to the X-Men universe with ‘Marvel’s Wolverine’, which launched on September 15 as a PlayStation 5 exclusive.

That game had a bumpy road to release. A ransomware attack in December 2023 leaked story details, mechanics, and an unfinished build, and the studio went quiet for a long stretch afterward, leaving many fans worried about the project.

Now attention is shifting to what comes next. According to a report from Insider Gaming, new Insomniac job listings hint that the studio’s rumored ‘X-Men’ game could feature multiple playable characters.

A listing for a Staff Hero Designer covers combat, traversal, and the core controls for “one or more playable characters” on an upcoming project, and it names allies among the systems the designer would oversee. Insider Gaming noted that the plural “characters” appears 4 times in the listing.

Other openings point to a large-scale action game. A Senior Combat Designer role covers enemy AI, mini-bosses and large boss encounters, while a Senior Gameplay Programmer position focuses heavily on enemy, boss and ally behavior.

It’s important to note that none of the listings mention the X-Men or any Marvel title. Insomniac hasn’t confirmed the project, and the “one or more” wording still leaves room for a single-hero game.

Insider Gaming’s theory is partly based on elimination. The studio’s other rumored projects, including a ‘Spider-Man’ sequel and a ‘Venom’ game, would likely focus on a single lead character, which makes a team-based X-Men game the most likely fit.

The release timing is still murky. Leaks from 2023 reportedly pointed to an X-Men game arriving around 2030, but no official date has been announced, and that window remains unconfirmed.

‘Marvel’s Wolverine’ was described early on as the first entry in a trilogy that would lead into a wider series of X-Men titles. Unlike Insomniac’s open-world ‘Spider-Man’ games, it was a linear, single-character hack-and-slash adventure.

Critics gave it a mixed reception. The game holds a Metacritic score of around 77 to 78, making it Insomniac’s lowest-rated original release since 2016’s ‘Song of the Deep’ and placing it below every ‘Spider-Man’ entry.

Reviewers praised its brutal combat, spectacular action, and portrayal of Logan. They criticized its repetitive fights, limited exploration, linear corridor design, and underwhelming story.

Sales have been more encouraging. According to preliminary estimates from analyst Rhys Elliott of Alinea Analytics, ‘Marvel’s Wolverine’ has sold around 1.9 million units, or roughly $130 million in revenue.

That puts it ahead of several other PlayStation releases this year, though still behind ‘Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’, which sold 2.5 million units in its first 24 hours. Player ratings on the PlayStation Store have also been very positive.

A team-based game could address some of the criticism aimed at ‘Wolverine’. Switching between several mutants, each with their own abilities, would add the variety and scale that many reviewers felt was missing.

For now, the details are still speculative, and fans will need to wait for an official announcement from Insomniac or Sony. With ‘Wolverine’ already out and the studio hiring for an ambitious action project, though, the next chapter of its Marvel story may already be well underway.
