We are talking about 1899, which is a period drama that follows a ship that’s on its way to America from Europe, as the series follows a group of immigrants from different nations. But is 1899 based on a true story?
It is unlikely that 1899 is based on a true story as this is a mystery drama series that follows a similar tone to Dark but is probably going to be darker. In that regard, it is possible that there will be sci-fi elements in this series, especially because there are rumors that it will be about the Bermuda Triangle.
As of now, we don’t know a lot about 1899 because of the fact that it was supposed to be mystery drama series. That means that the mystery part of the storyline is still quite unknown, as it will only surprise us later when the series gets released. 1899 is set to get its release in the middle of November 2022, but not a lot of fans know what the series is about. So, with that said, what is the plot of 1899?
The entire plot of 1899 focuses on a steamship sailing all the way from Europe to get to the New World or America. There are numerous passengers on this ship, as these passengers come from different parts of Europe. They are all hoping to get to America in the hopes of starting a new future there. But the thing is that all of these passengers have their own specific reasons for wanting to escape the Old World.
As such, on its face, the series is an immigrant story that allows you to see immigrants that are hoping to escape their old lives so that they can start fresh in a new land. However, as this is a series created by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, it is clear that there is something deeper that’s going to happen in the storyline, as we can expect it to have a dark tone that is similar to what made Dark such a big hit.
Of course, as mentioned, Dark focused on the idea of paradoxes, time travel, and parallel universes. It is unlikely that 1899 will have the same kind of approach in its storyline, but we do know that there are also going to be mysteries and other similar twists that we can expect from it. It was in an interview from Deadline back in 2021 that the creators shed some light on what this series is going to be.
“Knowing that we did Dark, everyone can be assured that this is going to be something weird and wild and crazy,” Odar said. However, he makes sure to mention that they want 1899 to stand on its own. “We don’t repeat ourselves, we really hate that, but it’s going to be a fun puzzle for the audience. We are going back to our mystery roots.”
In that regard, we already know that 1899 is going to have a dark and mysterious storyline that is true to the roots of the creators. But we also know that 1899 is going to have a unique premise that might follow a different type of sci-fi theme. And the possibility is that it will be about the Bermuda Triangle.
The poster of 1899 suggests that the series will be about the Bermuda Triangle, even though there isn’t anything that’s been confirmed about what the big mystery in this series is. But we all know that there will be a big mystery here, as the synopsis already suggests that something eerie and creepy will happen.
Then again, nothing has been revealed by the creators of the series, as the big mystery is still a mystery. This will be part of the big twist that will form part of the entire storyline of 1899, as there are probably going to be a lot of different things that will happen in relation to the overall premise of what the sci-fi mystery side of the series is going to be. At this point, it is tough to determine whether or not 1899 is based on a true story. But the thing that we know is that it is a historical drama series that follows the storyline of a group of immigrants that are moving from Europe to America. As such, while it isn’t entirely historical in terms of whether or not it did happen, it still follows a theme that was prevalent at the end of the 19th century when European migrants were moving from Europe to the New World.
But the biggest reason why we don’t think 1899 is based on a true story lies in the fact that this series is like any of the other series from the creators of Dark. That means that it will follow sci-fi themes that couldn’t have possibly happened in real life. As such, it is highly unlikely that 1899 is based on a true story.
That said, there is still a good chance that there will be historical themes that will be followed in this storyline, as it does take place during a time in history when different people were moving from the Old World to America for different reasons. As such, it is possible that it might explore things that truly happened in history. But, as far as the characters and the possible sci-fi themes are concerned, it is highly unlikely that 1899 is based on a true story.
