We are already halfway through the month of November this year, which means, like every year, that we are now in a season of Christmas and Holiday-based movies. Netflix has already started updating its roster of Christmas movies with Falling for Christmas starring Lindsay Lohan a week ago, and now it’s time for HBOMax to give its own Christmas movie exclusive.
A Christmas Story Christmas is a Christmas comedy directed by Clay Kaytis (The Angry Birds Movie, The Christmas Chronicles). and when you see the movie’s title, the first you probably think of is how the title is pretty similar to Bob Clark’s comedy A Christmas Story, which was released in 1983. So, is HBOMax’s A Christmas Story Christmas a sequel, reboot, or remake, and is it even connected in any way with Clark’s original movie?
A Christmas Story Christmas is indeed a direct sequel to the original A Christmas Story movie. Peter Billingsley, who played the role of Ralphie Parker in the original movie now reprises his role in the sequel, which is set 30 years after the events of the original movie. Ian Petrella, Scott Schwartz, R. D. Robb, and Zack Ward are also reprising their respective roles from the original movie as Randy Parker, Flick, Schwartz, and Scut Farkus, respectively. So, yes, this new movie is a sequel and a canon to the original movie.
1983’s A Christmas Story tells the story of nine-year-old Ralphie Parker, played by Peter Billingsley, about one particular Christmas when he wanted only one thing as a gift for Christmas; a Red Ryder Range 200 Shot BB gun. Of course, when you’re a child, we all know that our Christmas wishes would be granted rarely. So, little Ralphie Parker attempted to convince not only his parents but also his teacher and Santa Claus at the local department store that this is truly a perfect gift for Christmas.
The sequel A Christmas Story Christmas is set thirty years after the events of the original movie, and it will follow now grown-up Ralphie who will return to his hometown with his wife and children to reunite with his childhood friends. His father has recently passed away, and his mother convinces Ralphie to give his family a Christmas like his father always did. Of course, for Ralphie that’s easier said than done, considering that the task of organizing a perfect Christmas is a lot tougher for an adult than it is for a child.
The late director Bob Clark co-wrote and directed the original movie which was released on November 18, 1983. Now, almost four decades later, a sequel with the returning cast will be released exclusively on HBOMax on November 17, 2022. Clay Kaytis, who is known for directing the Netflix Christmas movie The Christmas Chronicles and The Angry Birds Movie, helmed this sequel from a screenplay he wrote with Nick Schenk, who made up the movie’s story with the main star Peter Billingsley.
We are living in a time where a lot of known decades-old movies are getting sequels, and making a sequel after such a long time actually proved to be a better formula than making a remake. Blade Runner 2049, Coming 2 America, Doctor Sleep, and this year’s Top Gun: Maverick are only some of the sequels that arrived a few decades after the original movies, and the audience mostly well welcomed the return of known characters played by the same actors. Let’s not forget that the 1988’s Willow movie is also getting a sequel in a form of a TV series which is set to premiere on Disney+ by the end of this month, and next year we are also getting the long-anticipated fifth installment of the Indiana Jones franchise starring Harrison Ford.
A Christmas Story Christmas will be released exclusively on HBOMax, which means that Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures didn’t plan to make a sequel that will bring the fans of the original movie to theaters. Of course, although we all love theaters, there’s something special in watching a Christmas movie at home with a cup of hot cocoa and a blanket.
A Christmas Story Christmas will be streaming on HBOMax starting November 17, 2022.
