Is Alluka A Boy Or A Girl In Hunter × Hunter?

If asked whether Alluka Zoldyck is male or female, there is no defined correct answer because the author himself has made the characters whole lore ambiguous. As of 2021, fans can only speculate on whether she is male, female, or transgender. With Hunter X Hunter on hiatus yet again, fans have no choice but to wait patiently for the author to continue the story. 

Alluka was created as a gender-ambiguous character (a recurring theme in most series such as Hange Zoe from Attack on Titan). Notable theories are proving that Alluka is a girl. However, some fans have speculations of the opposite gender that also make sense.

Even though Hunter X Hunter is placed on an indefinite hiatus, a lot of fans still want to know more about the interesting characters in this long-running manga/anime series. That’s why I will explain everything I have observed so far as I watched and read Hunter X Hunter until it came to a stop!

Is Alluka A Boy Or A Girl?

When it comes to Alluka’s gender, Yoshihiro Togashi (Creator of the Hunter X Hunter series) left the character’s true gender ambiguous. Until the author himself announces anything about Alluka Zoldyck, fans will have to keep grasping the straws of past events and speculating whether Alluka is a boy or a girl. Based on my observation, I firmly believe that Alluka is a girl, and to that point, below contains some proof to make you consider it well.

Why Alluka Is A Girl?

Of all the people in the Zoldyck Mansion, Killua is the closest to her and often dotes on both her and the being that came and possessed her named Nanika. Due to the events in Hunter X Hunter, Killua finds a very close friend in the form of Gon Freecss whom he met during the Hunter exam. To this end, even after being raised as an assassin, Killua is always open with Gon. 

When Killua introduced Alluka to Gon, he referred to her as his younger sister. He even introduced Nanika to Gon, even though Nanika was kept as a huge secret by the Zoldyck family and butlers. This shows that he is telling the truth to Gon about Alluka. Alluka or Aruka in Japanese is also a female name. But as stated before, take this with a pinch of salt and consider other theories regarding the gender of Alluka Zoldyck.

Why Alluka Is A Boy?

Killua is not the only brother of Alluka in the Zoldyck Family. Two of the Zoldyck siblings, Illumi and Milluki, refer to Alluka as a brother. Even the butlers of the Zoldyck Family refer to Alluka in a masculine way referring to Alluka as Bocchama or Bocchan.

Although do keep in mind that the people mentioned above do not consider Alluka as having a soul due to her current state (Possessed by Nanika) and merely consider Alluka as not human. Even Illumi and Milluki treat her like a tool (Because she can grant wishes if certain conditions are done). The other members of the Zoldyck family refer to Alluka by name, hence the ambiguity of her gender. 

Aside from these, there is another theory on her gender. This other theory is also known to be extremely popular with Hunter X Hunter fans. It will be discussed in the next question just right down below.

Is Alluka Actually A Transgender?

Due to the ambiguous nature of Alluka’s gender, other fans have considered that might be transgender. Though Nanika is genderless, Alluka refers to herself as female. This could be the reason why Killua, being the doting brother that he is towards her, refers to her as a female while most of the butlers and her two other brothers refer to her as male. 

He could be a male dressed as a female, like Haku in Naruto or Kikunojo in One Piece. After all, Alluka wears traditional Japanese shrine maiden attire with boots and a headband. In any case, as stated before, These are just speculations, and we would have to wait for the author himself to announce what Alluka’s true gender is. 

Bonus Theory

It was assumed that Alluka was a boy because a lot of fans refer to the younger picture of the Zoldyck siblings altogether with the presumed Alluka being the kid who was not facing the camera. It was also said that all the siblings were boys. It makes a lot of sense if you assume that Alluka was not considered to be a human being by almost all of the Zoldyck Family aside from Killua. 

It would also make sense that she would not be allowed to join the taking of the photograph and that the kid who was not facing the camera is another Zoldyck brother who has not been introduced to the story as of yet. This would in turn open up the possibility that Alluka is female. 

Nanika, the other being inside the body of Alluka, is also referred to like it by everyone in the Zoldyck household except for Killua who would accept the thing as being a part of Alluka and would also be considered his sister.

Is Alluka Voiced By A Girl?

Alluka Zoldyck is voiced by Maaya Uchida. Maaya Uchida is a Japanese actress, voice actress, and singer who works for I’m Enterprise. She is well known for voicing a lot of well-known characters in both anime and games. She voiced fan-favorite characters like Rikka Takanashi from Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!, Liliruca Arde from Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?, Koito Minase from Musaigen no Phantom World, Rea Sanka from Sankarea, and the Guild girl from Goblin Slayer. 

She is well known for voicing characters that are described as Chuunibyou. Aside from anime, she is very well known for voicing Fischl (a character also known for being a Chuunibyou) from the recently popular game Genshin Impact. She is also known for voicing the villainous Melty Q. Melromarc from The Rising of the Shield Hero, a character that drew a lot of hate from people who watched the series. 

She also has a younger brother, Yuma Uchida, who is also a well-known voice actor that made a lot of people laugh voicing Iori Kitahara from Grand Blue. Aside from female roles, She also voiced Norman from The Promised Neverland.

Also, take note that characters voiced by a female voice actress do not automatically make a character female. With Alluka identifying herself as female, we should refer to her as she. If you ever want to come up with your conclusions, you could check out a couple more things about this topic because it has been going around for years without any conclusion whatsoever. 

Do Characters Voiced By A Female Voice Actress Automatically Make Them Female?

Of course not. If you have watched a lot of anime through the years, you would’ve known that a lot of shonen characters are voiced by a female voice actress. As stated before, Maaya Uchida voiced Norman from The Promised Neverland, one of the main characters in the show. 

Interestingly, several voice actresses have been dubbing the voices of well-known characters in ever-popular anime shows, both finished and ongoing series. For sure most fans already know about these voice actresses, and which voice they played in the series. But for those who do not know, for sure you will feel amazed! 

These notable characters are: Uzumaki Naruto from the show Naruto, who is voiced by Junko Takeuchi; Monkey D. Luffy, from the show One Piece, who was voiced by Mayumi Tanaka; and even Goku from Dragon Ball is voiced by Masako Nozawa. No wonder why their voices do not sound too deep, particularly Goku’s.

Why Is Alluka So Feminine?

Alluka is a very soft-spoken child. Upon the discovery of her powers and the fact that she is part of a very well family of assassins, she lived a very sheltered life. Also among the Zoldyck family, She has no combat abilities when it comes to fighting and physical endurance. She also wears clothes that are similar to a Japanese shrine maiden with boots and a headband. 

With most of the Zoldyck family even afraid of Alluka’s ability to potentially wipe them all out in an instant, she was left with only one butler to take care of her. Aside from Killua, no one wanted to make contact with her. She would then play with dolls to entertain herself. She gives an aura of a calm and gentle person, though that all changes when she is in her wish-granting mode. 

This is the main reason why a lot of fans consider Alluka as a female character instead. 

However, due to the confusion that the author placed in making Alluka’s gender totally ambiguous, some are still wondering if Alluka really is a girl. Hopefully, by the time Hunter X Hunter resumes and continues to progress further, I hope we can all get the true answer regarding this mystery that’s shrouding Alluka.
