The Friday the 13th multiplayer survival game was first developed by IllFonic and published by Gun Media in May 2017. With over 20 million registered users, the game has enjoyed some decent popularity since it was released. Being a multiplayer game and with a large worldwide audience, players hope the game could be cross-play.
Unfortunately, Friday the 13th is not crossplay. You can’t play against players on a different platform. You can’t migrate from one platform to another without losing your in-game gains.
Read on as we dive deep on whether Friday the 13th is crossplay and discuss the future possibilities of the game.
Is Friday the 13th Cross-Platform?
Friday the 13th is available on several platforms. These are:
- Windows PC
- PlayStation 4
- Xbox One
- Nintendo Switch
To be cross-platform means you retain your data when you shift from one platform to another. Unfortunately, Friday the 13th is not cross-platform.
When you switch to playing on another platform you don’t have access to your previous unlocks, rewards, and game progression. You have to restart from the beginning and level up afresh. However, when you return to playing on your original platform all your data will still be intact.
You can purchase Friday the 13th on Steam, PlayStation Store, and Xbox game store for $14.99 for the standard edition and $19.99 for the Ultimate Slasher Edition.
Even though the game is available on these different platforms, you can’t play someone who is on a different platform. That is, if you’re playing on Nintendo Switch you can’t play with someone who is on PlayStation.
Is Friday the 13th Multiplayer?
Friday the 13th first came out as a multiplayer game. The single-player mode was released later.
In multiplayer mode, one player controls the serial killer, Jason Voorhees, while up to seven other players control the counselors. The serial killer’s objective is to kill as many counselors as possible. The counselor’s objectives are to escape Camp Crystal Lake or kill Jason.
The counselors also seek to complete certain quests or objectives, and these are much easier done as a team. Additionally, the game contains a “One tine kill” feature which requires strategic planning and seamless teamwork to succeed.
There are nine different playable versions of the serial killer, each with its strengths, weaknesses, and weapons. Similarly, there are 14 different counselors, each with its strengths and weaknesses. Another playable character is Thomas “Tommy” Jarvis, who is the only character with the ability to kill the serial killer.
You can play with your friends in ‘Private Match’ settings, or you can publicly search for open games using the ‘Quick Play’ feature.
You can play multiplayer offline. However, you’ll only be able to play as Jason. Also, you won’t be able to invite your friends to play coop.
Is Friday the 13th Crossplay?
Even though Friday the 13th is multiplayer and available on different platforms, you can only play with players on the same platform. For example, Xbox One players can only join Private Matches and Quick Plays hosted by other Xbox One players.
Soon after the first release, the developers, publishers, and gaming communities talked of crossplay for Friday the 13th as one of their main goals. However, the game is still not crossplay.
One of the possible reasons is the 2018 lawsuit which has slowed down further development of the game.
Another possible reason is the closing of the dedicated servers. The game is now only peer-to-peer for matchmaking. Launching new dedicated servers has taken too long and may no longer be in their plans. Because of these two reasons, the game is steadily losing popularity and may soon sink into oblivion.
Is Friday the 13th Cross-Generation?
For a game to be cross-generation it means that players can cross-play between different versions of the same brand. For example, someone playing on Xbox One can play with others who are on Xbox Series X|S, or someone playing on PS4 can play with someone on PS5.
Friday the 13th is cross-generation. In fact, on PlayStation, the game is backward compatible between PS4 and PS5 and offers a single graphics display mode at a resolution of 1080p and a 35 FPS frame rate.
Will Friday The 13th Shut Down Soon?
The game received its final update back in November, 2020 right before all its dedicated servers were shut down. Since then, the game has only been playable through Quick Play and Private Matches. The Database Servers also remain active, which means all your player data is still safe, including unlocks and progressions.
Additionally, the official forums have since remained in a locked state and are archived. The official social media channels remained low-key throughout 2021. There has been very little activity on their Facebook, Twitter, Twitter, Reddit, Twitch, and Discord accounts.
It’s unclear whether there will be a resolution to the lawsuit and if any resolution will revive the game’s further development.
Is Friday the 13th Worth It?
Despite all the lawsuit-related issues going on, Friday the 13th is still a very exciting survival game. The graphics are great, multiplayer is wonderful, and offline play is good too.
The lack of further development means if you get to the higher levels, you will quickly get bored. No new stuff coming in. Nonetheless, leveling up to those higher levels is still challenging and should keep you entertained for a reasonable time.
With the game’s popularity going down, there have been many enticing discounts on the game and DLCs. For example, Winter 2020 saw discounts of up to 80 percent off for the game and 50 percent off for the soundtracks.
