Is Iron Man Coming Back? Bettors Are Warming Up to Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark Return Ahead of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Few questions have hung over the Marvel Cinematic Universe quite like whether Robert Downey Jr. will ever suit up as Iron Man again. The actor’s first appearance as Tony Stark came in 2008’s ‘Iron Man’, and over the next 11 years he played the role in 10 Marvel films, before the character’s death in ‘Avengers: Endgame’.
His comeback took an unexpected turn. Downey made a triumphant Hall H appearance to reveal he was returning to Marvel, but he’s confirmed to be playing Victor von Doom in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, not Tony Stark. Still, plenty of fans haven’t given up hope.
Now prediction market traders are leaning into that hope as well. A Kalshi market asking whether Robert Downey Jr. will be back as Iron Man this year currently shows a 44.4% chance, up 12.4 points, with the market tied to the film’s December 18 release.
This isn’t the first time the market has climbed. As of late August, Kalshi traders saw a low chance of Downey returning as Iron Man or Tony Stark this year, after the odds had peaked at 44.9% on July 25 and then dropped.
The latest surge puts it right back near that high. Coverage of the market has noted that all it would take is one Doom-Stark variant in the Iron Man suit, or a backstory where he begins as Iron Man. For context, an earlier version of the market about 2025 resolved “No,” and its rules stated that archival footage would not count.

Part of the renewed buzz comes from the rumor mill. Scooper James Mack claimed ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will feature “a Tony Stark variant… and it will be RDJ himself, not some random actor.” As with any rumor, fans should take it with a grain of salt until Marvel Studios confirms anything.
Marvel has also pushed back on one of the most popular theories. The studio has debunked the idea that Doctor Doom himself is an Iron Man variant, emphasizing that Doom is a separate character. Even so, some ‘Doomsday’ merchandise has carried Iron Man branding alongside Hulk and Captain America.

There is one confirmed Iron Man return on the way. At D23, Disney revealed that Downey will reprise Tony Stark for 2 Avengers Campus attractions at Disney California Adventure, both opening in 2028.
The timing raised eyebrows. The actors reportedly shot their scenes during production on ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, and Collider pointed out that Downey had his Tony Stark hair and beard, leading some to wonder whether audiences might see Tony himself in the film.
On the other side of the debate is Marvel’s long-standing stance on Iron Man’s sacrifice. At the time, Kevin Feige said the studio intended to keep Tony’s death in ‘Endgame’ untouched, which is a big reason many fans assumed the character’s MCU story was over.

Downey’s double life in the franchise makes things even stranger. He’s playing Tony Stark inside Disneyland while also playing Doctor Doom on the big screen in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’.
With the market sitting just under 50%, traders are essentially treating an Iron Man appearance as a coin flip. The answer will arrive when ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ opens on December 18, and Marvel isn’t likely to spoil anything before then. Whether Downey shows up as a Stark variant, a flashback, or strictly as Doom, his return has already turned into one of the film’s biggest mysteries.
