The manga was first released on January 22, 2018, and it was freely serialized on the Shōnen Jump+ app and website. Shūeisha gathered and released the chapters in thirteen tankōbon volumes. The series was released in English in North America thanks to a license from VIZ Media. It is set in the Edo era of Japan and centers on the pursuit of immortality by the assassin Asaemon Sagiri and ninja Gabimaru. The rest of this article is going to focus on the publication of the Hell’s Paradise series and all its aspects. We will go over the whole publication history and ultimately tell you whether the Hell’s Paradise series is over or still ongoing so that you know how much material from this great series you can expect.

Hell’s Paradise manga

Hell’s Paradise was written and drawn by Yūji Kaku. The series was published from January 22, 2018, to January 25, 2021, on the Shōnen Jump+ platform of the publisher Shūeisha. Shūeisha also released the chapters in tankōbon, with the first volume released on April 4, 2018. A total of 13 volumes have been released. Special chapters were also published in the 27th/28th issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump on August 6, 2018, as well as in the magazine’s 28th issue published on June 10, 2019.

The Shōnen Jump+ editing team received storyboards for the first three chapters of Hell’s Paradise in 2017. Hideaki Sakakibara, a huge admirer of Yūji Kaku’s artwork ever since Ghost in Jump Square, gladly agreed to take on the series and started out as its second editor with chapters two and three. He thought Hell’s Paradise was the “popular combat fantasy” series that Shōnen Jump+ had yet to produce and had the potential to become a print bestseller.

The “multi-protagonist tale” of the island’s inmates, executioners, and monsters first was a concern for Sakakibara. Although he believed a manga with a battle royale-style plot would be interesting, he was concerned that it would result in a slow-moving narrative where they would have to divide the pages among the characters and not be able to show as much of the action of the major characters. He did, however, acknowledge Kaku’s brilliance for rapidly and simply presenting characters, as well as his sketching prowess for making it all work. What would occur in sets of ten chapters, or a whole volume, was prepared by Kaku and Sakakibara. The publisher allowed Kaku complete creative control of the artwork.

As for the published material, Hell’s Paradise consists of 13 volumes, as we have said, that have been published like this:

So, what do all of these things tell us about the series? Well, as old Hell’s Paradise fans will know, the manga series has been over since 2021. Since then, the main series did not release any new materials, so for all Hell’s Paradise fans, we can only confirm that the series, at least its written part, is over, and we don’t know that there are any plans to continue it. The anime adaptation is still ongoing, so fans can enjoy the story like that, but the manga is definitely over, and there are no known plans for a sequel series.

Hell’s Paradise anime

An anime adaptation of the Hell’s Paradise manga was initially announced in the 8th issue of the Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine that was published on January 25, 2021. During Jump Festa 22, the first trailer for the series was officially unveiled to the public. The series is being animated by studio MAPPA and directed by Kaori Makita, with Akira Kindaichi writing the script, Koji Hisaki writing the characters, and Yoshiaki Dewa writing. The anime series had its official premiere on April 1, 2023, in Japan on TV, Tokyo, and other channels. The series was well received by fans and critics alike and is currently airing on a weekly basis, every Saturday, in Japan and, thanks to Crunchyroll, around the world via simulcast.

Back in November 2022, Crunchyroll announced that it had obtained the streaming and broadcasting rights for the series outside of Japan. The series began its simulcast broadcast on April 1, 2023, around the world; the initially released version was the original with local subs; at this moment, no information about a dubbed version has been revealed.

As of the time of writing this article, the Hell’s Paradise anime series is quite alive and well. There are absolutely no signs of cancelation since the series has only just begun, and with the initial reviews being quite good, it is not likely that any rumors of the series’ cancelation or the series reaching its end could appear at this time, which means that there is still a lot more of the anime series to enjoy.
