Is Trinity “The One” or Is Neo Still “The One”?
The Matrix Resurrections changed some things when compared to the original trilogy, which makes sense seeing how the Matrix had to be rebuilt from scratch, practically. Now, with Neo’s role a bit different and Trinity’s role increased, people have been wondering whether the Messianic concept of “The One” has also changed – to be more precise, is Trinity the new “One” and or is Neo still “The One”?
In The Matrix Resurrections, Trinity received part of Neo’s code and The Analyst realized that the two of them together posed the true threat. While she wasn’t “The One” in the original trilogy, Trinity has certainly become a part of “The One” in Resurrections, but that also means that Neo has remained “The One” and that, now, the two of them together are “The One”.
We have to warn you that there are major spoilers in the continuation of this article, so if you haven’t seen The Matrix Resurrections, you should approach this article carefully. Having said that, we are going to further elaborate on the above-given answer with additional details from the new Matrix movie. With the information provided in this article, you’ll come to properly understand our answer and the new situation in the movie.
Is Trinity “The One”?
In order to actually understand this article and the question we’re answering, we think we have to explain the concept of “The One” as it has been outlined in the franchise. In The Matrix Morpheus said the following:
When the Matrix was first built, there was a man born inside who had the ability to change whatever he wanted, to remake the Matrix as he saw fit. It was he who freed the first of us, taught us the truth – As long as the Matrix exists, the human race will never be free. After he died, the Oracle prophesied his return and that his coming would hail the destruction of the Matrix, end the war, bring freedom to our people. That is why there are those who have spent our entire lives searching the Matrix looking for him.
– Morpheus
This quote basically explains the concept of “The One” as it was presented throughout the series; “The One” is a Messianic entity that is supposed to rid the humans of the Matrix. The One, also known as the Prime Program, is a systemic feature of the Matrix in which a randomly selected individual wears a special code.
This person is then endowed as an avatar in the Matrix with enormous superhuman abilities, which sometimes manifest as extraordinary powers in the real world.
The special code has the function of collectively assigning to the person who wears it all the anomalies that emanate from the few people who continue to reject the Matrix. This essentially makes the One an “Integral Anomaly” or the SUM of all anomalies.
The mechanisms by which The One emerges are quite simple and embedded in the Prime Program process: When the anomalies in the Matrix reach a certain threshold and begin to cause serious problems, a random human is selected by the machines to be born with a special code (the Integral Anomaly) that, as stated earlier, connects and links all the anomalies within the Matrix to that human’s programming.
The Oracle, knowing of the existence and purpose of the Chosen One because it is her duty to guide humanity to find the Chosen One, will enlighten him as to his true nature and guide him to the Source where he will complete his task of reinserting the main program and resetting the Matrix.
It does this by foreshadowing the return of the Chosen One to the people of Zion to help them free humanity from the grip of the machines. The Architect who created the Matrix is also aware of The One’s existence and purpose, and refers to The One as an “eventuality”.
Essentially, The One’s purpose is to ensure the stability of the Matrix by containing the anomalies within an individual rather than allowing them to spread throughout the system.
So, now that we have explained the role of The One in the franchise, we can get to the main question – is Trinity now The One? Well, Trinity has received Neo’s powers in Resurrections, which cannot be denied.
And while that wouldn’t be so strange per se due to her intense contact with Neo’s code, the Analyst himself has confirmed that Trinity has become a threat – but only in liaison with Neo.
This means that, by herself, Trinity is not “The One”, but together with Neo, the two seem to be the new Chosen One, who has now become a dual entity. So, Trinity both is “The One”, and isn’t “The One”. Lana Wachowski complicated it a bit, but it makes sense if you watch the movie.
Is Neo Still “The One”?
Neo initially doubts that he is indeed the chosen one when he meets the Oracle, who appears to him as an old woman. She claims that Neo has “the gift” but that he seems to be waiting for something.
Now, the original trilogy does conclude with Neo being The One, the only Chosen One for that matter. But, with the changes in The Matrix Resurrections people have – rightfully, we might add – started asking some questions.
When we see Neo in Resurrections, he is a normal guy who is not aware of his role or his history, but after his resurrection and rediscovery of his true nature, Neo’s powers slowly returned to him over time, though he was initially unable to use them all, e.g. he could not fly when he tried. However, he was now able to send out powerful telekinetic shockwaves with a simple flick of his wrist.
He could still stop bullets, but his telekinesis seemed to be weaker in this area, as Neo had to exert more effort than before. When Neo and Trinity confront the analyst again, Neo’s powers seem to have fully returned, including his ability to fly on his own, as he is seen flying across the sky alongside Trinity.
So, in the end, we do see that Neo still is “The One” and that he has the same powers he had when he knew he was The One. This means that Neo has remained The One, but since the new One is a dual entity, his full potential is activated only in cohesion with Trinity.
How Did Trinity Get Neo’s Powers?
The exact reason for this is unknown, but it is assumed that, when the original Matrix was reconstructed, Neo’s original code, including his connection to the Prime Program, was preserved. The Analyst realized at one point that Neo’s power was great, but that his true potential in the new Matrix would only be awakened in conjunction with Trinity.
This means that Trinity has become one with Neo and that the two form a single, powerful entity. During the rebuilding of the Matrix, Trinity apparently obtained a portion of Neo’s code, giving her the ability to access the Prime Program herself. This in turn allowed her to access the same powers (or at least part of them) that Neo had in the original trilogy.
