Biopics about controversial public figures rarely get to tell a complete story in just one film, especially when that figure’s legacy is as complicated as Michael Jackson’s. The 2026 film ‘Michael’ tackled the singer’s rise from his early years in the Jackson 5 through his ascent to global superstardom, deliberately choosing to focus on who he was before fame reshaped his public image.

That approach left plenty of ground still uncovered, particularly the controversies that have followed Jackson’s legacy for decades. With a sequel already in development, fans have been curious about just how far the follow-up will go in addressing the more difficult chapters of his life.

Jaafar Jackson, who plays his uncle in the biopic, offered some insight into what he hopes that sequel will accomplish. Speaking with GQ Middle East for its September cover story, Jaafar said he believes the follow-up film will give “even more insight” into the child abuse allegations his uncle faced, framed specifically from Michael’s own point of view.

Jaafar was careful to note that the sequel’s screenplay is still in development and that he has no direct influence over its final scope or story. Even so, he was clear about what he personally hopes to see explored. “It’s someone else’s story,” he said of how the allegations have typically been framed. “It’s someone else’s idea of what it is, and it’s mainly driven by an agenda.”

He went on to describe this as an ongoing frustration for the Jackson family, saying the core issue has always been the absence of Michael’s own voice in how his story gets told. That sentiment echoes long-standing efforts by Jackson’s family and estate to push back against the various accusations he faced throughout his career and after his 2009 death.

The push to reframe that narrative isn’t entirely new territory for the franchise. Reports emerged before the first film’s release indicating that ‘Michael’ had originally been designed to directly address the 1993 allegations, with much of its third act reportedly built around exploring the impact those accusations had on Jackson’s life and career.

According to those reports, that material was ultimately removed from the finished film following expensive reshoots, reportedly due to a legal complication tied to a settlement agreement connected to one of Jackson’s earlier accusers. That decision left the completed film largely free of direct engagement with the controversies that have defined much of the public conversation around Jackson’s legacy.

With that context in mind, Jaafar’s comments suggest the sequel could take a notably different approach than its predecessor. Rather than sidestepping the allegations entirely, he indicated a hope that the follow-up would engage with them more directly, even while filtering that engagement through Michael’s own perspective as the family understands it.

Whether the final script actually reflects that ambition remains to be seen, especially given the same kinds of legal sensitivities that reportedly shaped the first film’s final cut. Jaafar’s remarks nonetheless offer a clearer sense of where the Jackson family stands on how they’d like this next chapter handled.

Michael Jackson’s public legacy remains one of the most contested in entertainment history, shaped by decades of allegations, denials, and ongoing litigation involving his estate. A sequel attempting to address that history “from his point of view” enters genuinely difficult territory, balancing a family’s desire to reshape the narrative against a public record that includes serious, repeated accusations spanning much of Jackson’s adult life.

Do you think the Michael Jackson sequel should explore the allegations from his own perspective?
