James Gunn Is Launching a Podcast To Settle Which Parts of ‘The Suicide Squad’ Are DCU Canon
Ever since James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios in early 2023, fans have tried to work out which older DC stories still count. The DCEU was rebooted as the DCU, and familiar faces like Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, and Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam didn’t make the jump.
Gunn’s own projects sit in a strange middle ground. He wrote and directed ‘The Suicide Squad’ in 2021, which earned a 90% Rotten Tomatoes score, before launching ‘Peacemaker’, and several of those characters carried over into the new DCU alongside ‘Superman’ and ‘Creature Commandos’.
Now Gunn is planning to clear up the confusion himself. The DC Studios co-CEO has announced ‘The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon? — The Official Podcast’, which will explain which parts of the 2021 film belong in the DCU.
Gunn revealed the project in a post on X with a teaser video, tying the launch to DC’s Super-Villain month. Beyond sorting out canon, he said the show will also share behind-the-scenes fun facts about the making of the film.

He’ll be joined by 2 familiar co-hosts: his wife, Jennifer Holland, who plays Emilia Harcourt, and his longtime friend Steve Agee, who plays John Economos. A launch date and episode schedule haven’t been announced yet.
The format will feel familiar to DC fans. Gunn, Holland and Agee previously hosted ‘Peacemaker: The Official Podcast with James Gunn’, a DC Studios video podcast that ran for 16 episodes across both seasons of the show.

That series broke down each episode, shared behind-the-scenes details, and answered fan questions. Most importantly, the hosts explained which parts of ‘Peacemaker’ carried over to the rebooted universe and which didn’t.
Guest hosts on that podcast included Freddie Stroma, Chukwudi Iwuji, and executive producer Lars Winther. The new show looks set to bring the same approach to the movie that started it all.
The canon question has been confusing for a while. The ‘Peacemaker’ season 2 recap replaced the Justice League with the “Justice Gang,” signaling a reworked continuity, but it left plenty of loose ends from the earlier films.

The show has even nodded to the older DC films. In a season 2 flashback, Harcourt and Rick Flag Jr. discuss June Moone, a reference to the Enchantress storyline from the 2016 ‘Suicide Squad’. Gunn later confirmed on the ‘Peacemaker’ podcast that it was the same Flag fans had seen before.
Fan reaction to the new podcast has been mixed but curious. One of the most common questions is whether Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn exists in the DCU, something many hope Gunn will finally address.
‘The Suicide Squad’ has developed a loyal following despite its modest $168.7 million box office haul, which was affected by its pandemic-era release. A canon-focused podcast gives Gunn a chance to revisit the film and explain how it fits into his larger plans.
It could also give fans a clearer picture of the DCU’s foundations. With so many characters from the film appearing elsewhere in the new universe, knowing what still counts will help viewers follow where the stories are heading.
Gunn has a strong track record of being open with fans about his creative choices, and this podcast continues that approach. Expect detailed explanations, production stories, and plenty of jokes between the 3 hosts.
Until a release date is announced, fans will have to keep guessing which of the film’s chaotic moments still matter. Once the podcast arrives, one of the DCU’s biggest continuity puzzles should finally get an answer.
