In early 2023, James Gunn and Peter Safran introduced their own rebooted universe called DCU, along with a lineup of projects. The latest DCEU movie was ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,’ which did reasonably well compared to most MCU films released that year, which struggled both critically and at the box office. In January, Gunn and Safran unveiled the initial projects of the DCU slate, including a team of writers like Drew Goddard, Jeremy Slater, Christina Hodson, Christal Henry, and Tom King.
They planned out an eight to ten-year roadmap divided into “chapters,” with potential for further expansion. The first chapter, named ‘Gods and Monsters,’ featured movies such as ‘Superman’ (originally called ‘Superman: Legacy’), ‘The Authority,’ ‘The Brave and the Bold,’ ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,’ and ‘Swamp Thing,’ as well as television series like ‘Creature Commandos,’ ‘Waller,’ ‘Lanterns,’ ‘Paradise Lost,’ and ‘Booster Gold.’
Fans have observed that certain projects are receiving more attention than others. Recently, on Threads, Gunn was questioned about why not all Authority members were cast, especially those set to debut in the upcoming ‘Superman,’ such as Angelica Spica / The Engineer. Gunn provided a thoughtful response, emphasizing the importance of maintaining high quality standards at all times.
Through this response, Gunn indirectly revealed that the script for the upcoming ‘The Authority’ movie is still incomplete. He is currently occupied with ‘Superman,’ as principal photography for the film commenced on February 29th, coinciding with Superman’s canonical birthday. Gunn also disclosed that his upcoming projects of focus are ‘Peacemaker’ and ‘Waller,’ which will be filmed consecutively. ‘Superman’ is scheduled for release on July 11, 2025, while the release dates for the other projects are mostly undisclosed at this time.
