James Gunn’s Recent DCU Remarks Ignite Renewed Optimism for the Future of the Superhero Genre: “I love that idea. Trust the vision”

James Gunn is actively creating a completely new cinematic universe centered around characters from DC Comics. The first project set to launch in this new DCU is Creature Commandos, which will premiere on Max on December 5, 2024. However, Gunn has emphasized on multiple occasions that Superman will serve as the true beginning of the DCU.

Recently, during the DC Studios panel at NYCC, Gunn shared some thrilling insights about the future of the DCU with fans.

In this statement, Gunn stressed that every project from DC Studios will possess its own distinct identity and style, despite being part of the same cinematic universe.

He pointed out that while characters such as Superman, Supergirl, and the Lanterns will share this universe, each project will feature unique aesthetic and thematic elements, enabling a wide variety of storytelling and visual experiences.

Every project of DC Studios will be it’s own thing. Everything is going tremendously well. Superman, Supergirl, Lanterns. They are apart of this cinematic universe, but every one of those things will be very different aesthetically.

Fans are clearly excited about this, as evidenced by the overwhelmingly positive reactions to the statement:

One could argue that the same was true for the DCEU, as films like Man of Steel and Shazam! certainly had different vibes.

This contrast is also present in the MCU, where Echo and Agatha All Along differ significantly in tone and aesthetics. However, it seems Gunn has something unique planned, and fans have recognized this repetitiveness as a concern.

During the same panel, Gunn also mentioned that a Superman trailer is on the way, though it won’t be released immediately, and that filming for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is set to begin in January 2025.
