Every long-running crime drama eventually has to decide how to end, and ‘Mayor of Kingstown’ is about to do exactly that. The Taylor Sheridan series has spent four seasons following Mike McLusky, the fixer who keeps the peace in a Michigan town where incarceration is the only thriving industry. Now fans finally know when his story concludes.

The show debuted on Paramount+ in November 2021, and Mike took over as the town’s unofficial mayor after his brother Mitch died in the very first episode. The seasons have arrived on famously scattered timelines, with the second in January 2023 and the third in June 2024. The fourth premiered in October 2025 and ended with a December 28 finale that left Kingstown soaked in blood.

Just over a week later, Paramount+ confirmed that the fifth season would be the last. Now the streamer has announced a premiere date, along with a batch of first-look photos. Entertainment Weekly shared the news, and Paramount+ says the fifth and final season of ‘Mayor of Kingstown’ will premiere on Friday, January 15, 2027, exclusively on Paramount+.

Unlike the previous four seasons, which had 10 episodes each, the last chapter will consist of eight. The series was co-created by Sheridan and Hugh Dillon, with Dave Erickson returning as showrunner. The executive producers include Sheridan, Dillon, Renner, and Antoine Fuqua, and Sheridan directed the pilot back in 2021.

Filming got underway in Pittsburgh in March 2026. Renner leads a cast that includes Emmy and Golden Globe winner Edie Falco as prison warden Nina Hobbs. The cast also features Tony winner Laura Benanti, Hugh Dillon, Taylor Handley, Tobi Bamtefa, Derek Webster, David Morse, Necar Zadegan, Nichole Galicia and Lennie James.

The new images hint at plenty of collisions ahead. They show Renner’s Mike with Zadegan’s Evelyn, Benanti’s Cindy Stephens, and Dillon’s Ian. There’s also a shot of James as Frank Moses, who doesn’t look happy about being behind bars, along with Falco’s warden and Handley as Kyle. Another image shows Renner on the phone, the same shot featured in the Entertainment Weekly post.

The season’s official description sets up the stakes. In the wake of Tracy’s murder and the vengeance Mike and Kyle visited upon Callahan, FBI agent Russell Hardy, played by Morse, arrives in Kingstown searching for the fugitive Callahan. A true lawman, Hardy threatens to unearth all of Mike’s sins and secrets and disrupt the town’s tenuous balance of power. Nestor Carbonell has also joined the cast as Enrique Molina, a boss who comes to Kingstown to avenge a missing relative.

The series has gained momentum as it has gone on. Season 4 holds a perfect 100% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes, and some viewers regard it as one of Sheridan’s best shows. At the same time, Deadline noted that it has been crowded out by Sheridan’s other projects, and that its most recent season failed to break into the Nielsen rankings.

That mix of critical acclaim and quiet ratings helps explain why the final season is a shorter, more focused run. Knowing the ending is coming also lets the writers play with the idea of Mike giving up the mantle of mayor in a way they never could before. Whether he walks away, pays the price, or both, the show promises to bring its story of power, corruption, and survival to a definitive close.

If you need a refresher before January, the first four seasons are available on Paramount+. Several outlets also note that earlier seasons reached Netflix about 10 months after their Paramount+ debut, so the final season may take a while to arrive there.
