There’s been a lot of talk about what’s going on with Pirates of the Caribbean 6, and now producer Jerry Bruckheimer has finally given fans a bit of an update. Even though the movie still doesn’t have a release date, Bruckheimer told ScreenRant that they’re working on the script and trying to get it just right.

While many people thought the next Pirates movie would have a totally new cast, that might not be the case. In an interview with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan, Bruckheimer said some familiar faces could return.

“We’re working on a screenplay. Hopefully we’ll get it right — and then we’ll make it. We really want to make it, that’s for sure,” he said.

When asked if the new movie would continue the story or go in a new direction, he answered, “It’ll be a new take on it.”

Then came the big question: would there be all new actors?

“Well, not all new actors. We’ll have some back,” he said. When pressed to name who might return, Bruckheimer smiled and said, “I’m not going to tell you which ones — you’ll have to guess.”

That’s as much as he would say, but it still gives fans hope that some of the original characters could show up again.

Right now, Disney is actually working on two different Pirates projects. One is a reboot being written by Jeff Nathanson, who also worked on Dead Men Tell No Tales and the upcoming Mufasa: The Lion King.

The other is a possible spin-off that was meant to star Margot Robbie, with a script by Christina Hodson, the writer behind Birds of Prey. Bruckheimer said in the past that a reboot would be easier to make because it doesn’t rely on certain actors being available.

The last movie in the series, Dead Men Tell No Tales, followed the story of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann’s son, Henry Turner (played by Brenton Thwaites), and Carina Smyth (played by Kaya Scodelario), who turned out to be Captain Barbossa’s daughter. It seemed like Disney might take the story in a new direction from there, but nothing has been made official.

As for Johnny Depp, who played the beloved Captain Jack Sparrow in all five previous movies, Disney dropped him from the sixth film following the legal fight between Depp and his ex-wife, Amber Heard. During his 2022 trial, Depp said Disney cut ties with him after Heard’s 2018 op-ed, where she wrote about being a victim of abuse.

Even though Depp won the case, there’s been no sign yet that he’ll return. But in 2024, Bruckheimer told ComicBook he still wanted Depp back. “It’s a reboot, but if it was up to me, he would be in it,” he said.

Right now, we don’t know exactly when Pirates of the Caribbean 6 will come out, or who will be in it. But from what Bruckheimer said, it sounds like the door isn’t totally closed for some of the original cast to return.
