John Maclean’s ‘Tornado,’ Starring Tim Roth, Sets May Release Date

Japanese jidaigeki movies are among the most popular genres of Japanese cinema, especially those made by Akira Kurosawa. Similar to what Westerns were in Hollywood, these movies captured the essence of old Japanese culture while providing viewers with amazing stories.
And while the West has tried to replicate such movies with its own period pieces, on a general level, they were not as successful, although the recent success of the Shogun series might point to a new trend.
In light of that, we are happy to announce that Joh Maclean’s period piece Tornado is getting a wide release soon, and in this article, you are going to find out how it is all connected to jidaigeki films.
Tornado is an action period drama set in 1790 Britain, where a group of traveling samurai is doing shows. At one point, they meet a group of ruthless criminals, and as you can imagine, the meeting is not a pleasant one. But one of the samurai, Tornado, comes up with a cunning, yet dangerous revenge plan.
The movie premiered at the Glasgow Film Festival in February to solid reviews and we can now confirm that a poster has been released, along with a confirmed wide release date, which is set for May 30, 2025.
The British cast is headed by acting legend Tim Roth, who is playing the criminal Sugarman, while Jack Lowden is playing his son, Little Sugar. Tornado is played by Japanese model and actress Kōki, while her father is played by Takehiro Hira, whom we recently saw in Shogun.
The premise is a promising one and with great initial reviews, Tornado might be a very interesting revenge flick that might just become one of the year’s surprising hits when it comes out in May.
