John Stewart Never Becomes a Yellow Lantern in the ‘Lanterns’ Finale, but the Theory Was Not Baseless

Ahead of the season finale of ‘Lanterns’, some fans became convinced that John Stewart would be the first Yellow Lantern in the DC Universe. The finale, titled “Dirt and Stars,” aired on Sunday, October 4, as the eighth episode of the HBO series. The question became the biggest talking point around the show.

The John Stewart Yellow Lantern idea did not play out the way theorists expected. In the closing moments, John names himself the Green Lantern of Earth. Fear still sits at the center of his story, though, and that is why the theory deserves a closer look.

The John Stewart Yellow Lantern Theory Before the Finale

The speculation grew after the finale trailer arrived. Online commenters predicted that Sinestro would tempt John with a yellow ring, and one wondered whether the show would force him to choose between green and yellow. The trailer itself gave viewers plenty to work with.

The promo centered on fear, the emotion that powers the Yellow Lantern Corps in DC Comics lore. Episode 7 had also expanded Sinestro’s role in a way that suggested the Yellow Lantern Corps could debut in some form. Taken together, those signals made a yellow twist feel plausible.

There was also a hint that dated back years. When DC Studios first announced the series in early 2023, James Gunn shared artwork from the Earth One comic that showed John as a Yellow Lantern. Comic Book Movie argued that this made a Yellow Lantern turn in the finale a real possibility.

Not every prediction pointed toward a lasting change. One TechRadar writer expected Stewart to take the yellow ring and use it to fulfil his destiny as a Green Lantern. That middle path turned out to be closer to what the finale delivered.

Sinestro and the Fear Lantern in the Finale

The episode opens with John pressing Sinestro for answers. Not believing him, John dips Sinestro in the fear water introduced in the previous episode. The scene keeps the yellow threat alive without turning it into a recruitment pitch.

The central fear object turns out to be tied to a different character. John charges a decommissioned ring using a lantern that Sinestro created for Noah. The finale does not claim that John has found a permanent answer to Noah’s powers or to the fear contained in the new lantern.

Noah’s role gives the episode its emotional weight. John learns that Noah Macon is a Manhunter, the same secret that got Hal killed when he found it himself. John refuses Noah’s request to be killed.

John Stewart’s Green Lantern Oath and the Role of Fear

The clearest answer to the Yellow Lantern question comes through the oath. Writing for What’s Alan Watching, Alan Sepinwall observes that the oath John improvises is structurally similar to the classic comics version but thematically very different. The shift says a great deal about the character the series has built.

In Sepinwall’s reading, the new oath pairs embracing fear with doing right, as if only someone who understands fear can be trusted to know what is right. FandomWire similarly notes that John rejects the traditional oath’s implication that a Green Lantern must be without fear. That choice carries extra meaning for a man whom his parents trained to be fearless from age 5.

The decision also costs him something. Charging Hal’s ring erases the Halogram, the stored version of Hal who has been guiding him. Even in their last scene together, John does not immediately follow the Halogram’s instruction to charge the ring.

What the Lanterns Finale Ending Means for Man of Tomorrow

The final scenes set out John’s new position clearly. He calls Guy Gardner to Rushville, shows off his unsanctioned ring and lantern, and describes himself as a kind of independent contractor. He tells Guy to look after the stars while he protects the planet. Guy is angry and warns that Oa will send an army once he reports back.

The arrangement carries real stakes for the wider franchise. John rejects any tie to the Green Lantern Corps, which leaves Gardner free to patrol the wider sector. Variety reports that the episode sets up how John becomes Earth’s sole Green Lantern in the ‘Superman’ sequel ‘Man of Tomorrow’.

The future of the series itself is less certain. HBO has not yet renewed the show, so the finale could also be a series finale. Season 2 has not been officially announced, which leaves John’s new arrangement as a possibility rather than a confirmed plot. So the Yellow Lantern theory ended as a misdirection built on real clues, and the question left hanging is whether John’s fear-friendly oath will survive the moment Guy Gardner carries word of his independent stand back to the Guardians, so what do you think happens when Oa answers?
