Few modern blockbuster characters are as tied to one performer as Captain Jack Sparrow is to Johnny Depp. Sparrow began as a supporting role, but Depp became the breakout performer and the franchise’s central figure. He first staggered onto screens in 2003’s ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,’ creating a character that quickly became inseparable from the series.

That partnership has been quiet for a long time. Depp last played Sparrow in 2017’s ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,’ which earned nearly $800 million worldwide. His legal troubles and the 2022 trial with Amber Heard left the Disney-backed series on an uncertain note. It has now been 9 years since Depp portrayed the pirate, and hopes for a sixth movie have been stuck in limbo.

Now Depp has finally addressed the idea himself. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight on his ‘Ebenezer’ press tour, he stopped short of confirming he will put the pirate costume on once more. What he did offer was a very specific condition: his only wish is “to send them off on a better note,” as relayed in the post from Culture Crave, which credited ET Now.

The full context matters. Depp framed it as an if: if things are exactly where they need to be with regard to how the franchise gets topped off, that is the only involvement he truly wants. In other words, this is less a yes than a statement of terms, and the terms revolve around the ending the series gets.

The loyalty angle is just as clear. Depp said he would never turn down a request from friend and franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer, citing a deep friendship between them. That fits with Bruckheimer’s own recent comments about the star.

On Sunday, August 16, Bruckheimer teased Depp’s return at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Anaheim, California. He revealed that Depp is in talks to return for the long-developing sixth installment. Even so, details remain scarce, including who will direct, what form the story will take, and whether Depp would be the central lead or share the film with a new generation of characters.

Bruckheimer has been hinting at this for a while. He confirmed to Entertainment Weekly in summer 2025 that he had spoken to Depp about a new ‘Pirates’ movie, and said the team was still working on a screenplay and was close to getting it right. Depp’s “better note” comment suggests the script is the deciding factor on his side too.

The franchise’s future has also been a moving target. One report suggested the new film wouldn’t be built around Sparrow at all, with Margot Robbie’s character taking charge and Sparrow appearing in a supporting role. As of 2024, two ‘Pirates’ projects were reportedly in the works: a fresh reboot with no returning characters and a Margot Robbie-led film. Which direction Disney ultimately picks could shape what a “better note” looks like.

Depp is not short on other work in the meantime. His Hollywood studio return is underway with Paramount’s ‘Ebenezer,’ and he also has Lionsgate’s 2028 thriller ‘Day Drinker’ ahead. That momentum gives him leverage, and it gives fans reason to hope the door stays open.

For now, nothing is locked in. There has been no official announcement regarding ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 6.’ But with the star naming his terms and the producer still chasing the right screenplay, the odds of one last voyage for Captain Jack may be better than they have been in years.
