‘Pirates of the Caribbean 6’ Is Setting Sail With Sparrow’s Son, Margot Robbie, and a Leaner, Meaner Vision for the Franchise

Few film franchises have carried quite as much nostalgic weight over the past two decades as ‘Pirates of the Caribbean‘. The swashbuckling Disney series turned a theme park ride into a genuine pop culture institution, with Johnny Depp’s roguish Captain Jack Sparrow becoming one of the most recognizable characters in modern blockbuster history. Nearly a decade after the last film hit theaters, the seas have been quiet, but the winds of change appear to be picking up fast.

Following Josh D’Amaro’s succession as Disney’s CEO, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ has reportedly been flagged as a top priority for both D’Amaro and Walt Disney Company president and CCO Dana Walden. That leadership enthusiasm has translated into something more tangible than wishful thinking, with real creative pieces reportedly beginning to fall into place behind the scenes.

According to industry insider Jeff Sneider, Oscar nominee Krysty Wilson-Cairns is onboard to write the script, and the story apparently revolves around Jack Sparrow’s son and a new character to be played by Margot Robbie. Wilson-Cairns is far from an unknown quantity, having co-written Sam Mendes’ acclaimed war film ‘1917’, and her involvement signals that Disney is treating this as a prestige production rather than a quick cash-in. The goal is reportedly for the new film to “capture the tone of the original films but with a modern edge and a tighter budget.”

‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Actor Hints at Possible Return for Disney Reboot

Robbie’s character is envisioned as an original, iconic figure described as a punk-rock cross between Jack Sparrow and Emma Stone’s Cruella de Vil. That is a genuinely intriguing creative target, and it suggests Disney is not simply trying to clone what worked before. As it was previously announced that Robbie would lead a ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ spinoff, this news likely signals that the spinoff and the mainline sequel have been merged into a single project.

The question dominating fan discussions remains whether Johnny Depp himself will return. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that discussions with Robbie have taken place, saying “We have talked to her,” while remaining more guarded on the Jack Sparrow’s son storyline, telling ET Online, “They’re close on part of it. That’s all I’ll tell you.” A Depp return is still very much up in the air, with budgetary concerns playing a significant role, as he would likely command a sizable payday that could conflict with Disney’s goal of keeping costs down.

Before Wilson-Cairns entered the picture, longtime ‘Pirates’ writer Ted Elliott had already worked on a draft of the reboot script, meaning some foundation is already in place even as the direction continues to evolve. Adding another layer of complexity, producer Bruckheimer recently acknowledged that ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 6’ and ‘Top Gun 3’, starring Tom Cruise, are progressing at similar speeds, with the latter appearing slightly further along at the moment.

Whatever shape the final film takes, there is a palpable sense that this long-gestating project is closer to reality than it has ever been. Bruckheimer has not closed the door on Depp’s return, at least on a conditional basis, previously indicating the actor would come back if he approves of the script. With a sharp new writer, a charismatic potential co-lead, and fresh Disney leadership invested in making it happen, the pieces are at least beginning to assemble in a way that feels meaningful.
