Actor Jon Bernthal is bringing The Punisher back to life with a new Marvel project. Known for playing Frank Castle in the Netflix series that ended in 2019, Bernthal is now working on a standalone special for Disney+.

This comes just before his upcoming appearance in Daredevil: Born Again, which will air March 5. Fans have been eager to see more of his gritty take on the character, and this special promises to deliver.

Bernthal isn’t just starring in the project—he’s also helping write it. He’s teamed up with director Reinaldo Marcus Green, who worked with him before on We Own This City.

Marvel gave the green light for Bernthal to shape the story how he wants. He’s focused on keeping it true to the Frank Castle fans love.

Marvel’s head of television, Brad Winderbaum, backs this vision. He described the special to Entertainment Weekly as, “It’s like a shotgun blast of a story, but also has all the pathos and emotion that you want out of a Frank Castle story.”

The idea for the special came from Bernthal himself. He pitched it to Marvel, wanting to explore a deeper, rawer side of the character. The special is expected to hit Disney+ in 2026, though no exact date is set yet.

Bernthal’s passion for Frank Castle shines through, and that’s a win for fans. His push for a dark, no-compromise story could make this special stand out in the MCU. It’s always awesome to see an actor so invested in getting the character right, especially after the Netflix series left such a strong mark.

If he pulls this off, it might even open the door for more Punisher projects. What do you think about Bernthal taking charge of this special? Are you excited for a brutal, emotional Frank Castle comeback? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
