As fans of Jujutsu Kaisen will know, despite her overall popularity, Mei Mei is one of the most controversial characters in the whole series. She did not appear much, and she was always on the side of the heroes, but her unconventional morals, as well as the “episode” with Ui Ui, her younger brother, made Mei Mei a very interesting and talked-about figure. This article will once again address Mei Mei’s story but will explain what her exact role in Jujutsu Kaisen is. She is an enigmatic figure, and some fans thought that she might have been a traitor. Was she? Keep reading to find out!

  • Article Breakdown:
  • Mei Mei is a powerful jujutsu sorceress who, while being an enigmatic figure, cannot be considered a villain, and she is definitely not a traitor in Jujutsu Kaisen.
  • Mei Mei’s overall role has not been properly explained, but she has been on the side of the heroes consistently ever since Gojo’s Past Arc, which showed when she was still a student.
  • But, Mei Mei is definitely not a hero – she has her own and her brother’s interests in mind, and while she will help the protagonists, she won’t do anything to endanger herself and her brother, but she is not a traitor.

Mei Mei looks out for herself, but she is definitely not a traitor

Before we elaborate further, let us take a look at this fan theory, which we have to attribute to Reddit user SecondRealitySims:

I’m not sure if there’s still potential for it, considering where the story is, but it seems like Mei Mei was supposed to be the traitor.

The first clue is the Mechamaru arc. They state he may have been feeding information to someone higher up. Considering how the higher ups quickly turned on Gojo and those he protected after his sealing, it could have been one of them. But it also could have been Mei Mei. Her crows could also allow for espionage.

She also ran into Kenjaku and just…survived. Considering Kenjaku’s strength and him even killing Yuki, there’s no way she’d have been able have been able to fend him off. I also don’t see a reason why he wouldn’t want to kill her unless they were aligned.

While it may have been likely after Gojo’s sealing, she knew Japan was going down and told people to sell. It could have been her just being cynical. But it could have been her profiting off the knowledge she had of Kenjaku’s strengths and plans.

There’s also the ‘risk diversification’ and ‘those siblings are calculating’ line. They’re minor, but it begs the question of what sides could she be playing.

While there’s no clear reason for her betrayal, considering her personality, it’s easy to imagine her swayed by some offer from Kenjaku. Perhaps something as simple as the contracts he’s offered the Heian era sorcerers, ensuring her future life. She’s been shown to be greedy, and her selfishly looking to ensure she makes it out wouldn’t be surprising. Though there’s not much to support that.

But with the current state of the story, I can’t see much opportunity for her to do anything. Is she the traitor? Or has that been dropped by this point?

Edit: Wow. I suppose I was off on this. I’d completely forgotten so many details. It looks like I’m better off sticking to Nobara copium.

And while the author of this fan theory has stated that he was in the wrong, we cannot state that he was the only one who thought that Mei Mei was a traitor. Even in the series, before it was discovered that Mechamaru was the traitor, some characters suspected that Mei Mei might have worked with the villains and that she was actually the traitor. Here, though, we can confirm that she was not, and not just because Mechamaru was revealed to be the traitor, but because she really is not.

Mei Mei is an enigmatic and controversial figure; we can attest to that. She is nominally on the side of the heroes, but much like Yuki, she has her own agenda. And while she did participate in the fights on the side of the heroes more actively than Yuki, she always had her own goals in mind. She was there during the Goodwill Event, she was in Shibuya, and she even helped – as did Ui Ui – during the Culling Game, albeit from a safe distance. In that aspect, Mei Mei is definitely not a traitor.

She is an individualistic character, though, and looks out for herself and her brother first. Ideals such as chivalry and heroism mean little to her, as she only aims to earn as much money as possible and gain as much as she can from a situation. This doesn’t make her evil, just a… different brand of hero, and that is what you actually need to know about her and her role in the story. She is not a hero, but she is definitely a protagonist and is not a traitor (at least as things stand now).

On top of that, there doesn’t seem to be anyone Mei Mei could be conspiring with. She fought Kenjaku in Shibuya and was obviously an opponent of his, even fearing his actions; plus, Kenjaku is now dead. Sukuna? Yeah, that is as unlikely as Akutami fixing the plot holes from the previous arcs. Plus, during the Shinjuku Showdown, Sukuna attacked Mei Mei’s crows, so there’s that. The issue here is that there is no one else she could conspire with, and since Akutami is slowly leading us to the end of his manga, there really isn’t space for a completely new villain, which settles things.
