“Jurassic World Rebirth” Stomps Into Theaters with Fresh Bite & Strong Box Office

“Jurassic World Rebirth” is off to a strong start at the box office, bringing in $30.5 million on its first day in theaters. The movie, which is the seventh in the long-running dinosaur series, is expected to make around $133 million over the extended Fourth of July holiday stretch. That sounds like a lot, and it is, but it’s still less than what earlier films in the series made in shorter timeframes.
Back in 2015, “Jurassic World” made a massive $208 million during its first weekend. The next one, “Fallen Kingdom,” opened with $148 million in 2018. In 2022, “Jurassic World Dominion” brought in $145 million over three days. By comparison, “Rebirth” is expected to earn about $80 million during just the regular weekend part of its five-day debut. So while it’s doing well, it doesn’t quite roar like the earlier entries.
This new movie features big stars like Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali, all trying not to get eaten by dinosaurs. It’s directed by Gareth Edwards, who also made “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and “Godzilla.” The script was written by David Koepp, who also wrote the original “Jurassic Park” back in 1993. Critics seem to like “Rebirth” more than the last one, “Dominion.” They’ve said the new movie has more real scares. “It’s got some serious bite,” one reviewer wrote.
Universal Pictures spent around $180 million to make the movie and many more millions to advertise it. That’s cheaper than “Dominion,” which cost about $250 million to produce. That lower budget could help make “Rebirth” a win for the studio, even if it doesn’t hit a billion dollars at the box office like some of the earlier movies did.
Universal is hoping that “Rebirth” brings in enough money to kick off a brand-new trilogy. Since it cost less to make, the pressure to deliver a giant hit isn’t quite as high. If audiences keep showing up, more dino films could be on the way.
The biggest competition for “Rebirth” right now is “F1,” a racing movie from Apple Original Films starring Brad Pitt. That film made $57 million in its first weekend and is expected to drop to around $30 million to $35 million in its second weekend. That’s still less than half of what “Rebirth” is expected to earn. But Apple’s not too worried about the numbers. With a $3 trillion market value, it doesn’t have to stress about movie profits the way traditional studios like Universal do. As one industry insider joked, “Even a T-Rex can’t scare off the iPhone.”
These numbers and predictions were reported by box office trackers and industry insiders, with data coming from Universal and other studio sources.
