Kane Parsons Has Plans for ‘Backrooms 2’ Already in Motion, and They’re Being Kept in the Dark

The liminal space horror phenomenon that began in an anonymous corner of the internet has officially arrived as a major cinematic event, and its young architect is nowhere near finished with it. Director Kane Parsons, who built his reputation through a groundbreaking analog horror web series under the name Kane Pixels, has been making history with ‘Backrooms’ before the film even had a chance to settle into theaters. At just 20 years old, Parsons became A24’s youngest director to date, leading a production backed by some of the biggest names in genre filmmaking and bringing a creepypasta fever dream to the multiplex.

‘Backrooms’, which was distributed by A24, is based on the web series of the same name that Parsons created on YouTube. He uploaded his first entry in 2022 and drew in tens of millions of views, with the most recent episode of the series released in February 2025. The feature film adaptation stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell, and early critical reception has reflected the ambition behind the project. Reviews praised Parsons for prioritizing atmosphere over jump scares, with Ejiofor and Reinsve earning particular credit for giving weight to the story, while the craft teams were lauded for creating a mind-bending visual spectacle.

Now, with the film finally open, the conversation has quickly shifted to what comes next. In an interview with Variety, Parsons made clear that ‘Backrooms’ was always conceived as something larger than a single film, describing it as a foot in the door that would lead toward the true root of a narrative that has been building online for years. That framing alone signals a creator with a long-game vision, and his most recent comments have sent fans into a frenzy.

Parsons confirmed that he holds a contract and a hold at his end, stating plainly that he is “definitely not done” with ‘Backrooms’. He went on to say he has very specific things in the works right now that he is eager to discuss, but described the current state of those plans as existing in a “secret mystery world.” The candid reveal landed like a whisper in a yellow-lit corridor, equal parts thrilling and maddeningly vague.

On the red carpet ahead of the premiere, Parsons had also told ScreenRant that he would have “a very hard time” saying ‘Backrooms’ is done, and that audiences should expect to be “seeing a little bit more” of the franchise in the not-so-distant future. The film was projected to debut with around $20 million at the domestic box office, a figure that would represent a massive success for A24 and provide a clear commercial argument for expanding the universe.

Parsons has also expressed interest in bringing back actors from the original YouTube series if their characters are to return in future installments, a detail that will likely send the franchise’s most devoted followers back through years of online lore with fresh eyes. The world Parsons built frame by frame in his bedroom has become something far larger than any of those early videos could have suggested, and it appears the map of that world is much bigger than what was shown on screen.

Whether ‘Backrooms 2’ arrives as a direct sequel, a parallel story, or something stranger altogether remains locked behind that mystery door, so what form do you hope the next chapter of the ‘Backrooms’ universe takes?
