Kevin Feige Calls Robert Downey Jr. “The Greatest Actor of His Time”

Casting a beloved former hero as a brand-new villain is never a simple decision, especially when that character has never quite landed on screen before. Marvel Studios knew it was taking a massive swing when it decided to bring Robert Downey Jr. back into the fold, not as Tony Stark, but as one of Marvel’s most notoriously difficult characters to adapt.

That risk has only grown heavier the closer ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ gets to release, with fans and critics alike wondering whether Downey can truly separate himself from over a decade of Iron Man history. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has now addressed that pressure head-on, and his confidence in Downey couldn’t be clearer.

Speaking with Empire, Feige called Downey “the greatest actor of his time” and said he “can pull off anything.” He also revealed that Downey “found something fairly quickly” with his interpretation of Doctor Doom, suggesting the transition from hero to villain came together faster than the daunting nature of the role might have implied.

That praise comes with real context behind it. Doctor Doom has notoriously struggled to translate to live action, appearing previously in 2005’s ‘Fantastic Four’ and its 2007 sequel via Julian McMahon, and again in the 2015 ‘Fantastic Four’ reboot through Toby Kebbell, with none of those takes landing particularly well with fans or critics.

Feige’s confidence in Downey isn’t a last-minute development, either. He’s previously explained that conversations about pairing Downey with Doctor Doom actually began before ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ even hit theaters, well before Marvel’s public pivot away from Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror as the franchise’s next big villain.

According to comments Feige gave to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio had already started recognizing that Kang “wasn’t big enough” and “wasn’t Thanos” even before Majors’ legal troubles forced Marvel’s hand. Once the studio regained the rights to Doctor Doom through the Fox acquisition, Feige described it as pairing “one of our greatest characters” with “one of our greatest actors,” a plan he called long in the making rather than a reactive scramble.

Downey’s own comments about returning to Marvel echo that same sense of inevitability. After winning his Academy Award for ‘Oppenheimer,’ Downey had indicated he’d happily return to the franchise, describing it as an integral part of who he is as a performer, long before his Doctor Doom casting was officially revealed at Comic-Con.

The cast surrounding Downey in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ reflects just how large-scale the film’s ambitions really are, bringing together Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Vanessa Kirby, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach alongside X-Men veterans like Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, and Rebecca Romijn.

With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set to hit theaters on December 18, Feige’s comments make clear just how much weight Marvel is placing on Downey to finally get this character right after nearly two decades of missed attempts. Whether audiences agree that Downey has cracked the code on Doctor Doom will ultimately be decided once the film actually arrives.
