Kevin Feige Just Gave the Biggest Hint Yet About How ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Will End

Marvel Studios has spent months building anticipation for its next Avengers event, dropping just enough details to keep fans theorizing without giving away anything substantial. Between returning legacy heroes, a new villain played by a familiar face, and a scale the studio keeps calling unprecedented, expectations for this next chapter have only grown heavier.

That anticipation reached a new level following Marvel’s presence at San Diego Comic-Con, where studio president Kevin Feige sat down for a conversation touching on the film’s storyline and the mammoth scale of bringing so many characters together on screen. As usual, Feige kept most of the plot details close to the chest.

He didn’t stay entirely quiet, though. Speaking about the film’s conclusion, according to SlashFilm, Feige teased, “I don’t want to spoil anything, but I think fans will be incredibly satisfied and yet incredibly surprised by where it’s headed, and then we’ll have a hard time waiting a year for Secret Wars.”

That comment alone has fueled a fresh wave of speculation about how ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will set up its 2027 follow-up. The framing suggests a finale substantial enough to leave audiences reeling, while also positioning the wait for ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ as its own kind of cliffhanger torment.

Doomsday’ brings back Chris Evans as Steve Rogers and Robert Downey Jr. in a new role as the film’s central villain, Doctor Doom, marking his return to the MCU after stepping away from Iron Man. The Russo Brothers, who previously directed ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ are back behind the camera as well, reuniting with the franchise that made them two of the highest-grossing directors in box office history.

Feige has also described the project elsewhere as one of the most ambitious films the studio has ever made, pointing to how it pulls together characters and realms from across Marvel’s film history in ways previous crossovers haven’t attempted. That scale is a big part of why expectations for the ending are running so high heading into its release.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is currently set for a December 18 release, with ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ following exactly one year later. Some reports have floated the possibility that ‘Secret Wars’ could ultimately be split into two parts, though whether that happens reportedly depends on how ‘Doomsday’ performs both critically and commercially.

The pressure on ‘Doomsday’ extends beyond just plot mechanics. The MCU has struggled to fully recapture its post-‘Endgame’ momentum, and Marvel is clearly hoping this next Avengers event can reset the conversation heading into the back half of Phase 6. Feige’s comments suggest the studio is confident it has an ending capable of doing exactly that.

Whether Feige’s teaser holds up once the film actually arrives remains to be seen, but it’s certainly done its job of keeping fans talking in the meantime. With so many storylines and characters converging in one film, the bar for a satisfying yet surprising ending is set incredibly high.
