Few villains have dominated a Marvel marketing campaign quite like Doctor Doom. Ever since Robert Downey Jr. was revealed as the Latverian ruler at Hall H in July 2024, fans have filled social media with theories, fan art, and cosplay inspired by the iconic armored villain.

That excitement has only grown as ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ approaches. The Russo brothers’ film opens in theaters on December 18, and Doom’s metal mask and flowing green cloak now appear on everything from posters and Funko Pops to light-up popcorn buckets.

Now Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has gotten in on the fun himself. A newly shared photo shows Feige smiling alongside a Doctor Doom cosplayer, giving fans a lighthearted look at the studio chief embracing the character at the center of Marvel’s next big event.

The cosplayer wears a polished silver mask, gleaming metal gauntlets, a chain across the chest, and a dark green hooded cloak, arms crossed in a commanding pose. Feige, dressed casually in a dark cardigan and a cap, stands beside him holding a folder and grinning.

The photo was taken outside a building marked “Wells Building”, and it quickly spread online among Marvel fans who loved seeing Feige’s playful side. The image is a fun reminder of how much faith Feige has placed in the character. He has called Doom one of the most interesting characters in Marvel’s history, someone highly intelligent who sees himself as a hero rather than just a villain.

In an interview with the Chinese press, Feige explained that the team wanted the greatest actor in the world for the role. He said seeing Downey in ‘Oppenheimer’ convinced them, and compared the choice to the risk of casting Chris Evans as Captain America.

Bringing back Marvel’s most famous hero as its most famous villain was a bold move. So far, the reaction to the marketing suggests it’s paying off. Marvel’s campaign has kept Doom front and center. New posters for RealD 3D, 4DX and Dolby Cinema all spotlight the villain, while international artwork shows him looming over both the heroes and the Sentinels.

Theater chains have joined in too. Cinemark Brasil revealed a glowing Doom head popcorn bucket and a throne-shaped cup, while the Funko collection includes several versions of the character, among them a Funko-exclusive Lord Doom figure.

Presales for the film have reportedly passed $125 million, showing how much interest the villain-led event has generated. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ brings together heroes from across the multiverse to face Doom. Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Pedro Pascal and Ian McKellen are among the stars returning.

The film also marks Patrick Stewart’s final screen appearance as Professor X following his death on October 28, adding emotional weight to the release. Several international markets, including China, will get the film on December 16, 2 days before the U.S.

Cosplay has long been one of the clearest signs of how deeply a character connects with fans. Seeing Feige pose so happily with a Doom cosplayer suggests he’s just as excited as the audience for what’s coming.

With the final trailer expected in mid-November, Doom fever is likely to keep spreading. For now, this photo is a fun snapshot of Marvel’s leader enjoying the hype around his studio’s biggest villain.
