Kevin Feige Teases Deadpool’s Future and Discusses Incorporating R-Rated Deadpool into PG-13 Films: “That’s the Idea”
With just a few days left until the release of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ anticipation is high for the MCU’s first R-rated film. Early projections are already suggesting it could be the R-rated hit of the year, potentially surpassing ‘Inside Out 2’ as Disney’s most profitable movie this summer.
The marketing campaign has heavily spotlighted cameos, variants, and comedic moments featuring Reynolds and Jackman. However, fans are speculating that ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ might not be a one-off for the studio. Given the iconic status of both characters and the film’s potential to impact the MCU significantly, many are wondering if there’s a larger plan for Deadpool and Wolverine in the MCU beyond this film.
Feige recently spoke with Phase Zero about this topic, and Deadpool’s future inevitably came up. The interviewer inquired about the possibility of Deadpool appearing in other MCU projects and how he might be integrated into films that aren’t necessarily rated R.
Feige, while keeping details under wraps, explained that the plan has always been to take characters that wouldn’t traditionally mix and bring them together in a movie.
You know what fun, obviously, about the comics, is anybody pops up anywhere. But also what’s fun about the team-ups in Marvel team-up it’s almost always characters that don’t belong together. I remember sitting in interviews like this when we were promoting ‘Iron Man 2,’ and people knew we had ‘Thor’ in production, and we had announced that we were going to make an ‘Avengers’ movie and people were going “How in the world is Thor, this Norse mythological god, going to be able to be in a scene with Tony Stark? How’s that going to work?” And my answer was, that’s kind of the point of the movie, that’s kind of the whole idea, is take these people that shouldn’t be together and put them together.
Given this statement and previous comments about Deadpool, X-Men, and the future of the MCU, it seems clear that Deadpool has a promising future, even in PG-13 projects.
