Kit Harington Finally Explains Why He Said Yes to HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Amid Ongoing Backlash
Few franchise reboots in recent memory have carried as much baggage into production as HBO’s ongoing “Harry Potter” series. Every casting announcement seems to reignite the same debate, forcing actors to publicly justify decisions that, in almost any other context, would simply be exciting career news.
That pattern repeated itself again in August when Nicholas Hoult exited the role of Gilderoy Lockhart just two weeks after being announced, citing scheduling conflicts amid mounting online criticism. HBO needed a replacement, and the actor who stepped in has spent the past several days doing exactly what his predecessor seemingly wanted to avoid: talking about it.
Kit Harington addressed why he wanted to join HBO’s “Harry Potter” series as Gilderoy Lockhart during a September 16 appearance on “Today,” speaking candidly about his decision despite ongoing calls to boycott the franchise over author J.K. Rowling’s comments on transgender issues. Harington will play the vain celebrity wizard and Hogwarts professor in Season 2, based on “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” a role originated on screen by Kenneth Branagh in the 2002 film.
When TODAY’s Craig Melvin asked directly why Harington wanted to be part of the project despite the pushback, the actor didn’t hesitate. “I’ve been a lifelong Harry Potter fan,” Harington said on TODAY. “I was a fan when I was a kid, and then I rediscovered it as an adult, listening to it every night. I listen to it every single night, and it helps me go to sleep, and I know other people do that as well, so they’re really important books to me.”
Harington also explained his enthusiasm for the show’s long-form structure, arguing it offers something the earlier films never could. “When I knew this was happening as a series, I thought it was the best idea,” he said. “I love the films, but with this, they can really explore the books at their fullest, and for a book nerd like me, that was a really great idea. So it was one that I had my eyes on; I really wanted to be in it, and the part I’m playing is just the best.”
That enthusiasm isn’t entirely new territory for Harington, either. He previously voiced Lockhart in a full-cast audio edition of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” released by Audible in December 2025, giving him a direct throughline to the role well before HBO’s casting shakeup brought him into the television adaptation.

Beyond addressing the backlash, Harington also offered a glimpse into just how tightly controlled the set has been. He joked that the production felt heavily guarded, describing it as one of the most secretive projects he’s worked on, where he felt unable to reveal even small details without drawing attention.
Harington’s situation echoes a broader pattern that has followed nearly every major casting announcement tied to the series. John Lithgow, who plays Dumbledore, previously said he considered quitting the role over similar backlash, while also describing Rowling’s views as “ironic and inexplicable.” That tension between fan enthusiasm for the source material and ongoing criticism directed at its author has become an almost unavoidable talking point for the show’s growing ensemble.
