Sony is continuing to build their Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. After two Venom movies, with the third one already in development, and Morbius, which will hopefully and finally be released on April 1, the next movie will be centered on Kraven the Hunter, with Avengers: Age of Ultron star Aaron Taylor-Johnson playing the titular character.
It was recently announced that Russell Crowe also joined the movie, and the third official cast member is White Lotus star Fred Hechinger, who is set to play Chameleon, Deadline has learned.
Dmitri Smerdyakov, also known as The Chameleon is the supervillain that debuted on the comic book pages in March 1963. He is Kraven’s half-brother and master of disguises, known for his ability to impersonate virtually anybody. What’s interesting, Dmitri Smerdyakov already appeared once on the big screen, in the MCU movie Spider-Man: Far From Home, in which he was played by Numan Acar.
Kraven the Hunter will be the fourth movie set in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, which was previously known as Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters. After Spider-Man joined the MCU in 2016, Sony decided to use the characters for which they still have rights to create their own Cinematic Universe based on Marvel Comics.
MCU and SSU crossed paths already in Spider-Man: No Way Home, in which Tom Hardy reprised the role of Eddie Brock/Venom in the post-credit scene of the movie, (before he was taken back to his own universe), and Michael Keaton is also set to reprise the role of Adrian Toomes/Vulture in the upcoming movie Morbius.
Kraven the Hunter is only one of the movies currently in development for SSU. Venom 3 is still likely on the way, as well as the Madame Web movie, in which the titular role will be played by Dakota Johnson.
Directed by J.C. Chandor, Kraven the Hunter is set to be released on January 13, 2023.
